Cellar of Death

[12:20 PM, 1/23/2018]DMWhat up jerks! Phil, meet Sam and Dave. Sam and Dave, meet Phil.
[12:45 PM, 1/23/2018]KelranHi guys.
[12:46 PM, 1/23/2018]KelranDarren I will have everything you need today.
[12:47 PM, 1/23/2018]DM👍
[12:49 PM, 1/23/2018]KitHey Phil! Welcome to DND. This is Sam, otherwise known as Kit.
[12:49 PM, 1/23/2018]FrakusKit! I dig it!
[12:52 PM, 1/23/2018]DMOh right. So just to get everyone up to speed on who's who:
Sam is a Tabaxi Rogue named Kit (basically a cat person)
Dave is a Goblin Monk named Gazfire Fogwind
Ryan is a Lizardfolk Barbarian named Frakus
Jenny is an Aasimar Warlock named Raven. She has a pet raven named Serge.
Phil is an Elf Rogue. Name TBD.
[12:55 PM, 1/23/2018]DMalso, before we start, do any of your characters already know each other? Or will you all be meeting for the first time?
[3:57 PM, 1/23/2018]GazWe should tie bells to the two rogues.

Amiright?!
[3:58 PM, 1/23/2018]DMtwo rogues?
[3:58 PM, 1/23/2018]DMone
[4:04 PM, 1/23/2018]FrakusRed leader, standing by.
[4:17 PM, 1/23/2018]RavenI’m a lone wanderer
[4:18 PM, 1/23/2018]KitI think I’m the only Rogue
[4:20 PM, 1/23/2018]DMyup
[4:26 PM, 1/23/2018]KitLet’s meet for the first time.
[4:27 PM, 1/23/2018]DMyou're all such different characters with different backgrounds, I think that makes sense. No one knows anybody.
[4:51 PM, 1/23/2018]FrakusMy only friend is me.
[5:22 PM, 1/23/2018]KitBy choice or circumstances?
[5:22 PM, 1/23/2018]DMYou might say it was thrust upon him
[5:23 PM, 1/23/2018]RavenA rogue, a monk, a ranger, a Warlock, and a barbarian walk into a bar....
[5:23 PM, 1/23/2018]FrakusOne of them is thrusting
[5:23 PM, 1/23/2018]FrakusGuess which one
[6:59 PM, 1/23/2018]DMfound this handy little cheat sheet in case you guys needed to bone up
[5:49 PM, 1/24/2018]DMBefore we start, just wanted to give Phil a few tips, hints, things to know. Although these are still worthwhile reminders for the rest of you too. So pay attention class! Or don't. I'm not your mom.
[5:50 PM, 1/24/2018]FrakusThat certainly makes the dreams I’ve been having less worrisome.
[5:51 PM, 1/24/2018]DM1. The DM (dungeon master) is not your enemy. It might seem like it at times because I'm the one controlling the monsters, but I'm rooting for you guys. Think of it more as an improv play we're all doing where you guys are the cast and I'm the set designer, lighting guy, cinematographer, etc... I want you to succeed as much as you do. It ain't me against you.
[5:51 PM, 1/24/2018]DM2. Try to think of it less in terms of winning or losing, but rather telling a cool story. This isn't a video game or a board game.
[5:53 PM, 1/24/2018]DM3. Take notes. This one's for all of you. You didn't really have to do this very much for the last adventure you were one, but that was a "dip your toe in the water" kind of adventure. This is a much bigger campaign and they're likely be a lot of sidequests, hints, names of people and places, etc... that you'll need to keep track of. You might get a lot of different plot hooks for different quests that you can't take on all at once so it's worthwhile to keep a notepad handy. Digital or otherwise.
[5:55 PM, 1/24/2018]DM4. Assume anything you're saying to another player is out loud. For instance, if you're in a room with a bunch of orcs and you're trying to plan out your attack strategy with the other players, the enemy is hearing that too. Your characters aren't psychic. Unless, you know, you're using a spell or something to communicate secretly.
[5:58 PM, 1/24/2018]DM5. Don't forget to use your Skills and Abilities. I'm not perfect and I might not fully understand your intentions if you're trying to accomplish something entirely through roleplaying. If you feel like I didn't properly understand that you were trying to seduce the shopkeeper for a better rate, go ahead and say, "Can I make a Persuasion check to see if I can bring his prices down". It's more fun to do it through straight-up roleplaying, but also a lot more straightforward and obvious if you just tell me "I want to make a bla-bla-bla check".
[5:59 PM, 1/24/2018]DM6. Ask questions! Not all details and important facts are just dumped on you for free. Or sometimes the description of a room or enemy isn't as detailed as you want it to be. Don't hesitate to ask whatever you want. Just because I stopped talking doesn't mean that's all the info you need to know. That goes for just general D&D rules too. Not sure about how something works? Ask away.
[6:01 PM, 1/24/2018]DM7. Along the same lines, NPCs (non-player characters....the non-enemy characters I control), they don't necessarily divulge every single thing they know just because you said "hi". Have a conversation with them. Some are forthcoming, some need to be intimated, or persuaded, or deceived, etc...
[6:04 PM, 1/24/2018]DM8. This last one is me on my knees. Read chapters 7, 8, 9 of the PHB. It's like 20 pages. Please. I beg you. You'll understand so much more about how the game works and you'll have a lot more agency over your characters. Also, read the description for your specific class and race. Two more pages. That's it.
[7:13 AM, 1/25/2018]KitNot sure if you guys already know but Dave and I are leaving on vacation for a week next Wednesday. Wifi has been reported as spotty at our resort. Wanted to give you all a head’s up.
[8:30 AM, 1/25/2018]FrakusHave fun guys!
[9:43 AM, 1/25/2018]DMoh cool. Alright, no worries. Until then though, it looks like we're pretty much ready to get started. I'll kick us off later this afternoon/tonight.
[12:06 PM, 1/25/2018]DMUntil then, whenever each of you gets a chance, you should tell us something about your character. Just a brief backstory. As of now, you're all in the city of Baldur's Gate, an immense city on the Sword Coast of Faerun. You're all here for different reasons. What brought you here? Who are you? Where'd you come from? etc etc...
[4:38 PM, 1/26/2018]GazGaze was a young goblin, no bigger than a human toddler, when a band of adventurers marauded through his goblin-village and claimed him as a pet.

At first, the group of elves, dwarves and humans treated him decently. But a goblin is an acquired taste as far as pets go. They soon grew weary of his scratching and wailing.

(Even goblin parents eventually reach this point, which is why so many young goblins find themselves in the world all alone.)
[4:44 PM, 1/26/2018]GazAt their wits' end, trying to resist the urge to just kill the unhappy goblin, the adventurers brought Gaz to a monastery.

The monks were not compelled at first to take Gaz in. He was not, as one might say, a promising student of the martial arts.

To bend the monks' will, the dwarf offered a jewelled sceptre as a gift to the monastery. He said it contained magical properties and channeled Ki energy.

This was a rather charismatic dwarf. The monks were convinced. They accepted Gaz along with the sceptre.
[4:48 PM, 1/26/2018]GazExcept, the dwarf was a liar. (Aren't they all?)

The sceptre soon proved worthless as a magical item. The monks put no value whatsoever in the jewels. They had accepted Gaz and gotten nothing but a shiny stick in the bargain.

Furious, one of the monks broke the sceptre in two.

He meditated several weeks to understand why he lost his composure so completely. In the end, he concluded: because he knew Gaz would prove to be nothing but a nuisance.
[4:54 PM, 1/26/2018]GazThe monk's intuition was accurate. Gaz was a poor student. His memory was short and his instincts were poor. He was short on patience and long on excuses.

The monks learned to despise him.

So much so that they concocted a story about a magical sceptre, broken in two, that contained the power to elevate all goblins to their rightful status as honoured and beloved creatures.

They told Gaz it was his destiny to bring the two halves of the sceptre together and restore the goblin race.

They gave Gaz one half of the broken sceptre and told him to go into the world and find the other half.

To be safe, to ensure he never came back, the monks buried to other "lost" half of the sceptre under the floorboards beneath Gaz' bed ... the last place in all creation that he was likely to look for it.
[4:57 PM, 1/26/2018]GazAnd so it is that you encounter Gaz: entrusted with a sacred quest, protecting one half of a magical sceptre, certain of his destiny to elevate all goblin-kind.
[7:13 PM, 1/26/2018]DMLove it
[1:18 PM, 1/27/2018]RavenMy name is Raven. I’m from a small village in the middle of nowhere. My parents were no ones. When I was a small child, I began talking about angels. Beautiful angels were appearing to me, even then. At first my parents thought it was cute. As I grew older, the angels kept appearing and my parents thought it was less cute. I scared them. I was a freak. So they sold me to a Warlock who was traveling through the village. He had heard of the freak child in a tavern. He offered them more money than they had ever seen. They didn’t even hesitate. I was twelve.
The Warlock was kind. He taught me about my visions. Helped me understand them. Told me what I am. An Aasimar. A chosen one. I traveled with him and learned about the world and about magic.
One day when I was 17, I was in our library and found a book. It was hidden under floor boards but I found it. It’s like it called to me. I opened it and the sinister knowledge within possessed my mind and filled me with darkness. In a moment of confusion and rage, energy flowed from me. Crackling lightning streamed from my eyes and my mouth and my fingers. I struck the Warlock who had entered the library to find me. I killed him instantly and set fire to our home. I escaped but the fire blazed for two days, torching entire parts of the town. Dozens died. At that time a raven appeared, resting on a scorched branch of the tree in front of my old home. It watched me, as I watched the fire blazing. When I turned to leave, it followed me. Now he is always with me.

I don’t talk about my past. I’m plagued on one hand, by divine visions from my deva angel, and on the other hand, by dark magic and consuming guilt. I wander around trying to kill evil shit to make myself feel better and alleviate the guilt. So evil shit, look out.
[1:19 PM, 1/27/2018]DM:)
[6:00 PM, 1/27/2018]DMJust FYI, although the detailed back stories are awesome and appreciated, no one needs to feel like they have to come up with an elaborate back story if they don't want to. No pressure. A couple of sentences is fine.
[9:37 AM, 1/28/2018]DMCough cough.
[9:37 AM, 1/28/2018]FrakusIt’s coming it’s coming.
[9:40 AM, 1/28/2018]KitDitto. Got a kids’ birthday party to contend with and then Kit will present herself.
[10:02 AM, 1/28/2018]DMHappy Birthday Eric!
[10:02 AM, 1/28/2018]KitHe says thanks!
[10:08 AM, 1/28/2018]FrakusFrakus is a lizardfolk barbarian. He was born in an unremarkable swamp village, where he lived most of his life. This is until it was brutally destroyed by an unprovoked goblin attack six summers ago. As the sole survivor from his village, he has vowed vengeance on the creatures that destroyed everything he ever knew. He was one of only three barbarians in his clan, but this is not why he survived. The attack happened while he was far from home on a hunt. It is only upon his return that he discovered the devastation. Strewn amongst the remains of his previous life, he found several broken and discarded goblin weapons, but not a single goblin corpse. His kin were clearly surprised and outnumbered. Overwrought with anger and guilt, Frakus is an empty shell of his previous self. He currently travels aimlessly from village to village, taking work where he can find it, and killing goblins any chance he can get.
[11:17 AM, 1/28/2018]KelranMy story almost done. I will send today
[11:51 AM, 1/28/2018]KelranKelran was born in a small Wood Elf village living in a forest owned by a nearby human count, meaning they had to pay taxes to the count. At 102, Kelran reached manhood, and became a petty thief, working as a carpenter for a day job. For eight years he would live like this, until one day selling his wares in a nearby human town, he encountered a corrupt merchant exploiting the townspeople.

Kelran realised what the merchant was doing, and therefore what he was doing (being a thief) was wrong. That night he snuck into the merchant's house, stole his money and handed it out to the people he had ripped off. It turns out this merchant was an agent of the local count, and for the next 12 years Kelran found himself becoming a vigilante, stealing, tricking and embaressing the count's agents and knights.

Six years into his vigilante spree, he married Kiki, a female wood elf from his village, who became his partner in crime. After 12 years of bringing about justice and revenge, including the execution of two of the count's worst followers, the count traced Kelran back to the village, and attacked the village in force.

Kelran considered running away, but realised if he abandoned the village, everyone would die. By this point his parents and childhood best friend were already dead, as were many other villagers, but he still had a chance to save the others. He confronted the count and challenged the count to a one-on-one duel. The count, having a sense of honour, agreed, and the two fought.

Kelran proceeded to get completely wrecked. The count was a fearsome warrior, and Kelran could barely keep up. It ended with the count cutting Kelran diagonally across the chest. Before he could finish Kelran, Kiki jumped at the count with her knife, allowing two of Kelran's friends to drag him to safety, but the count quickly killed Kiki.

Kelran without having a chance to say goodbye to his Kiki as she took her last breath, ran into the forest and has spent the last 13 years travelling as a vigilante thief, bringing retribution and justice to the corrupt and tyrannical, while helping the poor and needy along the way. He has, however, also become an alcoholic and gambler.
[11:53 AM, 1/28/2018]FrakusAwesome!!!
[11:54 AM, 1/28/2018]DMSweet.
[11:58 AM, 1/28/2018]RavenStupendous!
[12:01 PM, 1/28/2018]GazAll worthy
[12:15 PM, 1/28/2018]DMI think you just broke your nerd cherry Phil. Next time someone says to you, "I'm such a nerd because I like Star Trek and Doctor Who", you read them this.
[1:08 PM, 1/28/2018]KelranThis is why I am trying dnd so I can I get one of the last nerd badges 😀
[1:08 PM, 1/28/2018]Frakus😂
[1:09 PM, 1/28/2018]DMWe sew it to a fanny pack.
[1:12 PM, 1/28/2018]FrakusYou can put it next to your Minecrafter badge.
[1:21 PM, 1/28/2018]KelranYa I have the expert badge for that 😀
[5:08 PM, 1/28/2018]KitKit, now an adult in her prime, was born in a small coastal town into a loving family of Tabaxi. Her parents adored her and her two siblings, dotting on them and ensuring they had their fill of sardines from the nearby waters. They lived a life of leisure, her and her brother and sister sleeping piled together for most of their youth in the sunny, warm salt air.

During her adolescence, her parents finally recognized the need to teach their children to fend for themselves and began taking them on fishing and hunting trips. Kit, adept at acrobatics and the stealthiest of her clan, quickly became the chosen one as the family provider.

True to her Tabaxi nature, while on hunts for food, she began collecting treasures. One sunny day, as she snuck through a camp of hobgoblins, a glint caught her eye. Believing no one was aware of her presence, she snatched a jewel encrusted necklace from an open backpack and returned home quickly. She hid the necklace, kissed the sleeping heads of her parents and siblings, and headed back out in search of dinner. She returned home a few hours later to find the slain bodies of her entire family and a crude drawing done in blood of a figure that resembled her hanging from the noose of a necklace that looked similar to the one she had stolen.

Devastated, guilt ridden and panic stricken, she fled the only home she had ever known.

She’s spent the last decade mostly on her own in search of companionship. Even though it dredges up painful memories, she’s unable to deny her roguish nature. To make herself feel better about her thievery, she only steals from evil doers. Well... she does her best to only take from the baddies. Sometimes treasure is so hard to resist.
[5:10 PM, 1/28/2018]DMPerfect. Delightful. Morose. I love it.
[5:20 PM, 1/28/2018]DMSo we have a misguided, mistreated goblin monk on a fool's quest; an aasimar warlock haunted by her past, plagued by both good and bad voices infiltrating her mind; a lizard barbarian mercenary dedicated to squashing the life out of any goblin he sees; an elf ranger with a Robin Hood complex, a murdered wife, and a penchant for vice; and a guilt-ridden, lonely cat-person thief. "You get a dark past, and YOU get a dark past! EVERYONE GETS A DARK PAST!!!!"
[5:57 PM, 1/28/2018]DMWith the hard part done, we begin our quest! Each of your dark paths has lead you for one reason or another to the city of Baldur's Gate. You've each been here somewhere between 6-12 months, and each of you have been frequenters of the same tavern. You don't know each other, but being regulars of the same pub you'd be able to pick each other out of a line-up. The one thing connecting you all is the bartender. A jovial, likeable man, always with a smile, a good tale to tell, a witty joke, and an apt proverb always at the ready. None of you are quite in a good place quite yet, but the one person who's consistently been able to make you crack a smile has been him. A good man through and through.

Since this man is important to all of you I want you to be the ones to help flesh out his details. We'll go with first-come-first-served logic for the details. So if you're first to answer one of the details, let someone else answer next. But I want everyone to have a chance to come up with at least one detail about him. Let's start with his race. What is he? Human, gnome, elf, half-elf, dwarf, halfling, half-orc, whatever....
[6:03 PM, 1/28/2018]KitHalfling
[6:07 PM, 1/28/2018]DMHalfling it is! The bartender has a small ledge running around the inside length of the bar and some short ladders here and there so he can get down. On either side of the booze shelf there's a tall library ladder on rails so he can access anything he needs. Despite this, he's able to mix a concoction as fast as any normy.
[6:08 PM, 1/28/2018]DMNext. I've been saying "he", but only for convenience of saying he/she. Is it a man or woman?
[6:09 PM, 1/28/2018]DMof "not" saying he/she I mean
[6:14 PM, 1/28/2018]RavenMan
[6:14 PM, 1/28/2018]DMSausage it is. How about his age? Roughly. Youngish, middle-aged, older, elderly?
[6:19 PM, 1/28/2018]GazLadies love the halflings
[6:20 PM, 1/28/2018]DMEspecially because not always is everything "in proportion".
[6:22 PM, 1/28/2018]KelranOlder
[6:24 PM, 1/28/2018]GazWord ...
[6:26 PM, 1/28/2018]DMHe's got some salt and pepper in the hair, more than a few crow's feet, but there's still a twinkle in the eye and some hop in his step. He's been around the block to be sure, but that means all the more wisdom to impart.

What about his name? Don't worry about standard D&Dish names. Anything you want.
[6:27 PM, 1/28/2018]KelranDingle berry
[6:27 PM, 1/28/2018]GazJames Dingle Berry
[6:28 PM, 1/28/2018]KitJames Dingle Berry III
[6:28 PM, 1/28/2018]RavenJimmy D
[6:28 PM, 1/28/2018]DMJames Dingle Berry the 3rd it is. A long proud line of Dingle Berries.
[6:31 PM, 1/28/2018]DMAt some point in Jim's life he died. He died, but was brought back! Resurrected by powerful magics. How did he die? Was it a childhood disease? An unfortunate accident? Was he an adventurer himself in his younger days and become an all-too-common statistic for that lot? Something else? Be specific.
[6:33 PM, 1/28/2018]GazHe was still-born.
Never meant to be in this world. But brought back by a midwife/cleric whose heart broke for the parents
[6:33 PM, 1/28/2018]DMWow. Hadn't thought of that one. Nice.
[6:35 PM, 1/28/2018]DMHow about a physical trait? Scars? Tattoos? Lisp? Limp? Missing eye? Strikingly handsome? Dealer's choice.
[6:36 PM, 1/28/2018]DMI don't think Ryan's answered yet. Let's leave this one to him.
[6:49 PM, 1/28/2018]FrakusOut for dinner. Will catch up soon.
[8:50 PM, 1/28/2018]FrakusLoving it so far. He has a wooden middle finger. Lost it a no holds barred game of chance.
[9:05 PM, 1/28/2018]DMNice. Alright, I think we have a pretty good picture of Jim Dingle Berry the 3rd now. All in all an interesting, eccentric, delightful character. Basically, your only friend and acquaintance in this sprawling, congested city. Let's begin.

For the past several days, the talk of the streets and taverns has all been about the so-called "death curse": a wasting disease afflicting everyone who's ever been raised from the dead. Victims grow thinner and weaker each day, slowly but steadily sliding toward the death they once denied. When they finally succumb, they can't be raised – and neither can anyone else, regardless of whether they've ever received that miracle in the past. Temples and scholars of divine magic are at a loss to explain a curse that has affected the entire region, and possibly the entire world.

We join our adventurers at a cemetery. It is a warm day in Baldur's Gate as you lay your friend James Dingle Berry III to rest. Death came quickly. One day your friend simply began to waste away. No cleric or paladin could stop the death curse from taking him, just as the healers of Faerûn couldn't stop the dreaded affliction from taking any who died in the past. You've seen many people gone before their time these last tendays, but this hurts the most.

You stand before a small crowd, gathered at a shrine in Baldur's Gate. The cleric asked each of you if you would please give a euology by sharing a memory of your friendship. The time for you to address the crowd is now. Please take a moment to share a cherished memory of our dear James.
[6:08 AM, 1/29/2018]KitKit steps up to the front and turns to face the crowd. Chocked up from the passing of her only friend, she clears her throat and begins to speak. “Jimmy D3 was always happy to let me bend his ear. No matter how busy he was, he listened as though I was the only one in the tavern. As soon as I would sit down at the end of the bar, he’d pop up with my drink of choice, a Tom and Jerry, which he’d stir with his wooden finger. No matter how bad a day I’d had, that could always make me laugh.” The memory of Jimmy using his finger as a stir stick is Kit’s undoing. She’s no longer able to continue speaking coherently so leaves the front to rejoin the crowd.
[6:27 AM, 1/29/2018]FrakusFrakus gets up next. “He was a good barkeep. He was the only one who knew how to make a cricket cocktail with actual crickets. Always a bittersweet reminder of home. He was the only thing that made being in close proximity to some of the pub’s regulars, tolerable.” Frakus glares at Gaze as he says this.
[7:47 AM, 1/29/2018]RavenRaven gets up to address the crowd. She keeps the hood from her cloak on to retain a bit of privacy. She speaks quietly. “Jimmy got me. I never had to say much, he just got me. Made me feel like I belonged. He was good.” She turns to leave but pauses and adds, “Oh. And he owed me two whiskeys.”
[6:03 PM, 1/29/2018]GazGaz takes a step, then thinks he sees someone else come forward at the same time, so stops. He waits. There's no one else.

Now everyone is looking at him. He takes another step. Is this where he's supposed to stand? He isn't sure.

He raises his hands, palms open toward the sky, and says,

"Lo, here lies Jim Dingle. Um, the third. Berry, that is. Berry Dingle. Here he is. I mean was. Is."

A cough from the otherwise silent crowd. Gaz starts to sweat.

"He was a human. No doubt about it. But now he's dead."

Gaz drops his hands to his side.

He steps back.

He thinks: that was pretty good.
[6:06 PM, 1/29/2018]DMFucking delightful.
[6:06 PM, 1/29/2018]KitYes. Yes it was.
[7:57 PM, 1/29/2018]DMAny final words from Kelran, or is he maintaining a respectful, solemn silence?
[8:01 PM, 1/29/2018]KelranKelran can't handle the loss. Life so unfair. Bartenders are his favorite people. He is passed out drunk in the outhouse
[8:02 PM, 1/29/2018]FrakusLol
[8:37 PM, 1/29/2018]DMThe cleric thanks those of you who are upright. As the mourners begin to head home after saying their goodbyes to your friend, two people who stood at the back of the crowd approach. One is a female sun elf, older but still spry, dressed in the noble finery of a northerner. The other is more mysterious, draped in a heavy black cloak wearing a silver mask. The elf speaks, "Beautiful ceremony. It's clear your friend meant a lot to you." Kelran stumbles out of the outhouse kicking over some empty bottles. The sun elf looks over her shoulder at the drunken spectacle. "More to some than others it seems."

The cloaked figure cuts in with a dry, raspy voice, one that reminds you of the way Jimmy D spoke as death approached, "There is a chance the deceased's soul and countless others can be saved. If you act quickly, we might even be able to bring them back to life...and you can save those still living with the curse as well." The cloaked figure tries to stifle back a cough and fails.
[9:37 PM, 1/29/2018]RavenRaven had turned to leave but stops in her tracks. Out of habit she scans for her raven. He’s close by, perched on a nearby gravestone eyeing the two figures. Raven sighs, turns back towards them and approaches the elf. “How can this be done? How can we stop the curse?”
[9:41 PM, 1/29/2018]DMThe elf steps in front of the cloaked figure. "I lead a group of Harpers who are trying to uncover the cause of this horrible death curse." (Anyone proficient in History?)
[9:45 PM, 1/29/2018]DMI checked. You're not. You don't know much about the Harpers other than the fact that there are many factions and organizations across Faerun each with their goals and purposes. Harpers is one of them. She continues, "Have you ever heard of a lich?"
[9:48 PM, 1/29/2018]RavenRaven peers out from under her hood and waits to see if anyone else knows.
[10:50 PM, 1/29/2018]KitKit speaks up. No, what's a lich?
[5:53 AM, 1/30/2018]FrakusFrakus shudders. “A lich?!”
[8:02 AM, 1/30/2018]DM"Indeed", she briefly glances at Frakus, then quickly does a shocked double-take at his lizard face and shudders briefly. To the rest of you, "Liches are the remains of great wizards who embrace undeath as a means of preserving themselves. They further their own power at any cost, having no interest in the affairs of the living except where those affairs interfere with their own. They're barely shadows of their former selves. They're gaunt and skeletal, their withered flesh stretched tight across their bones. No wizard takes up the path to lichdom on a whim and the process to becoming one is a well-guarded secret. What we do know though is that an arcane ritual must be performed that traps the wizard's soul within a phylactery...which can be anything: an amulet, a book, a trinket of some sort, but usually whatever the lich was most attached to in its human past. Once they've become a lich, they become undead and so have all the time in the world to pursue whatever nefarious interests it desires."

The cloaked figure cuts in with a raspy voice, "Have you ever read those childrens' books, 'Barry Cobbler'? A lich is basically the same as Lord Molddewart".

The elf continues, "It must periodically feed souls to its phylactery to sustain the magic preserving its body. Once a soul is trapped, after 24 hours it is consumed and destroyed utterly. We believe its this same process that's behind this death curse."
[8:05 AM, 1/30/2018]Frakus“I heard they often employ goblins to do their bidding”
[8:12 AM, 1/30/2018]DM"I don't know where you heard that."
[8:13 AM, 1/30/2018]FrakusFrakus sneers incredulously.
[8:14 AM, 1/30/2018]GazGaz points at the silver-masked figure and says,

"I get it. He's the leech!"

He looks around at the others and realizes it came out more high pitched than he intended.
[8:22 AM, 1/30/2018]DM"Oh brother", the figure snorts. She removes the hood and silver mask and reveals a withered, sallow human face. Her gauntness reminds you of Jimmy D in his final days. "I'm not a lich you turd. Although I can see how you might mistake me for one given my appearance of late. I was an adventurer myself years ago. My name is Syndra Silvane. I died once and was raised from the dead. This death curse has struck me too. I don't know how much longer I'll last before I perish. Clerics have no help to offer. So as you can see, I have a vested interest in finding the source of this curse." Ashamed of her appearance in public she puts the hood and mask back on.
[8:31 AM, 1/30/2018]Kit"Can the curse be reversed?"
[8:32 AM, 1/30/2018]Raven“Any idea where the lich and his phylactery might be?”
[9:01 AM, 1/30/2018]DMTo Kit, "Well shit, I certainly hope so." Syndra coughs up blood.

To Raven, Remalia (the elf) says, "We're not 100% on whether or not it's a lich to begin with, so we definitely don't know the source, but there's a lich not far from here named Zaldara Cordress, otherwise known as the Duchess of Rot. We plan on interrogating this monstrosity to see what it knows. Hopefully it will have some idea as to where all the souls or going. Or maybe she's the source herself! We have a plan, but we need some help."
[9:28 AM, 1/30/2018]Raven“What’s your plan?”, Raven asks. She’s trying to play it cool, but the thought of meeting a lich is very enticing and her curiosity is overwhelming.
[1:54 PM, 1/30/2018]Frakus"A phylactery? What happens if we find it and destroy it?"
[2:34 PM, 1/30/2018]DM"Destroying a phylactery is the only means in which you can actually 'kill' a lich. If you were to kill its body through conventional means, the will and mind of the lich drains from it leaving only a lifeless corpse. Within days, a new body reforms next to the lich's phylactery. Destroying the phylactery itself is no easy task mind you. It often requires a special ritual, item, or weapon. Nevertheless, killing the Duchess is not our intent. We wish to question it.

"Our plan is to raid her lair and force her to cooperate in tracking the source of the curse. I believe the key to getting Zaldara to cooperate is to steal her phylactery. Our wizards have used a scrying spell to determine her phylactery is her spellbook, a tome bound in human skin, which she keeps locked in her basement. Our Harper forces will be the tip of the spear. We'll distract Zaldara by launching a shock and awe offensive on the upper floors of her tower. What we need is a small group of adventures to sneak in through her cellar to look for the spellbook. We'll keep the Duchess busy while you're doing that. If you're willing, we're happy to reward you for your efforts. 500gp. We'll also give each of you a healing potion. I don't wager you'll need it, but best to be prepared."
[2:48 PM, 1/30/2018]FrakusGroovy
[4:41 PM, 1/30/2018]KitKit’s in!
[6:00 PM, 1/30/2018]GazGaz takes completely for granted that the group does not intend to actually follow through with the insane plan. Surely, this is just big talk among strangers who don't want to lose face at Jimmy D's funeral.

Gsz nods in agreement, trying to look serious and committed.
[6:01 PM, 1/30/2018]FrakusHa!
[6:02 PM, 1/30/2018]KelranKelran in
[6:12 PM, 1/30/2018]DMRemalia says, "Well then, very good. You should all get a good night's rest. You're gonna need it. Tomorrow we set sail for Cloakwood. Meet us at the docks at daybreak."
[6:12 PM, 1/30/2018]DMUntil then, Baldur's gate has pretty anything you might want to stock up on first (although I think you're all broke). You can buy anything you can afford from the PHB.
[6:13 PM, 1/30/2018]DMArmor: p145
Weapons: p149
Equipment: p150
[6:13 PM, 1/30/2018]DMlet me know if there's anything you want
[6:14 PM, 1/30/2018]GazCan I get some varnish for my quarter staff?
[6:16 PM, 1/30/2018]DMYou find a quarterstaff shine shop. He charges 1sp for a bottle.
[6:17 PM, 1/30/2018]GazDo I have to shine it myself?!
[6:19 PM, 1/30/2018]DMOh! Phil, money: the conversions are:
Copper (cp) = 1
Silver (sp) = 10
Electrum (ep) = 50
Gold (gp) = 100
Platinum (pp) = 1000
[6:19 PM, 1/30/2018]DMHe charges 5cp to shine it for you.
[6:20 PM, 1/30/2018]GazTotal bullshit
[6:20 PM, 1/30/2018]GazGaz accepts but huffs
[6:21 PM, 1/30/2018]DMDone. It's super shiny. You can see your horrible goblin face curved around the shaft. Add the varnish and deduct the money from your sheet.
[6:31 PM, 1/30/2018]GazGaz tries to sell the rest of the bottle back to the shop
[6:33 PM, 1/30/2018]DMThe shopkeeper frowns and points at the sign near the coffer. "No refunds"
[6:37 PM, 1/30/2018]Frakus“I don’t know why you wasted your money. Goblin gut is a far more effective varnish. Dries to a nice glossy sheen and I had some on me...”
[6:38 PM, 1/30/2018]DMWhy are you with him? Wouldn't you be keeping as far from him as possible?
[6:45 PM, 1/30/2018]FrakusNope. Followed him in. Goblin hunter...
[6:46 PM, 1/30/2018]DMShould we roll initiative? Maybe you two can succumb to the death curse earlier than anticipated.
[6:47 PM, 1/30/2018]DMEither way, Gaze, a big lizard man says that to you.
[7:07 PM, 1/30/2018]RavenRaven looks for her bird companion. Finding him still on the gravestone, she whispers, “let’s go” and leaves at once. She contemplates the adventure she’s about to embark on and smiles a teeny smile under her cloak. “This should be interesting,” she thinks.
[8:24 PM, 1/30/2018]DMFor everyone else, even if you're not buying anything just let me know so I know if everyone's ready.
[8:33 PM, 1/30/2018]Frakus“Sac, rope, water skin, whetstone, and one days rations.”
[8:39 PM, 1/30/2018]DMClick your explorer's pack in your inventory. You already have some of that.
[8:39 PM, 1/30/2018]FrakusNice!
[8:46 PM, 1/30/2018]RavenRaven’s ok to go.
[8:46 PM, 1/30/2018]Frakus“Fishing tackle, grappling hook, iron pot, two torches, sac, whetstone.”
[8:54 PM, 1/30/2018]KitKit’s equipped. And whatever she doesn’t have, she’ll steal. Wait! What? She meant borrow.
[8:56 PM, 1/30/2018]DMfor Ryan, your total is 5gp 4cp. He cuts you a deal and rounds it off to 5gp. Add the shit to your sheet and deduct the coin.
[9:00 PM, 1/30/2018]FrakusCheck
[10:34 PM, 1/30/2018]KelranKelran good
[12:06 AM, 1/31/2018]GazGaz looks at his shiny quarterstaff and imagines it covered in dried guts.

"Seems unlikely." He says.
[8:01 AM, 1/31/2018]DMlol
[8:08 AM, 1/31/2018]DMThe next morning you all make your way to the docks. It's not hard to find which which boat is yours as you see dozens of adventurers preparing their supplies. Remalia sees you and beckons you over. "I'm relieved to see you all. I was worried some of you might get cold feet." She taps one of the Harpers on the shoulder and points towards a nearby crate. She pulls 5 healing potions out of the packing straw and hands one to each of you. (add 'em to your sheets)
[8:08 AM, 1/31/2018]DMYou notice the occasional glance in your direction from the more seasoned veterans. They mentally size you up, but they quickly go back to packing the ship.
[8:11 AM, 1/31/2018]FrakusPotion of healing in the app
[8:11 AM, 1/31/2018]KitDave and I are off. We’ll see how wifi is from the beach. We’ll do our best.
[8:11 AM, 1/31/2018]FrakusHave an awesome trip!
[8:11 AM, 1/31/2018]KitThanks. Potion was added for Kit.
[8:15 AM, 1/31/2018]DMOh yeah! Awesome! Have a great vacation guys. I'll put us on pause here until we hear back from you. If there's no wifi, or you just want to take a break from D&D, no worries. We'll be here when you get back.
[3:01 PM, 1/31/2018]FrakusSo when they’re gone, is it like the USS Callister episode of Black Mirror?
[3:02 PM, 1/31/2018]DMexactly
[3:02 PM, 1/31/2018]FrakusLet’s steal some genitals!
[12:32 PM, 2/1/2018]KitOla from the DR!
[12:32 PM, 2/1/2018]DMHola!
[12:32 PM, 2/1/2018]FrakusHey!
[12:32 PM, 2/1/2018]FrakusGood flight?
[12:45 PM, 2/1/2018]Ravenholla!!
[6:55 PM, 2/1/2018]DM"So, shall we shove off then."
[6:57 PM, 2/1/2018]FrakusGenital removal of the absent players first.
[12:30 PM, 2/2/2018]KitUneventful, which means good
[12:32 PM, 2/2/2018]RavenRaven's raven flies up and perches on the mast. Seeing this, she stashes her healing potion and boards the boat too.
[12:34 PM, 2/2/2018]KitKit and Gaz follow Raven on board.
[1:05 PM, 2/2/2018]FrakusFrakus boards the boat unenthusiastically.
[1:23 PM, 2/2/2018]KelranKelran hops on
[2:19 PM, 2/2/2018]DMA bell rings on the boat. A salty weathered halfling bellows for everyone to board. The rest of the Harpers hastily finish packing the rest of the supplies and mount the gang plank. You set sail leaving the comfort and safety of Baldur's Gate behind you.

It is the evening on the third day of your voyage that the winds seem to blow a little colder. The evergreen treetops of the Cloakwood rustle endlessly. Callbrax – the salty halfling mage who you now know to also be the captain – steers the boat alongside rocky shores. "See that?" he says to you, pointing to a monolithic black tower appearing just above the dark forest. "Zaldara", the mage says ominiously. "We're close."

Minutes later, the wind howls a lonely
[2:19 PM, 2/2/2018]DMoops
[2:19 PM, 2/2/2018]DMpressed enter too early
[2:23 PM, 2/2/2018]DMRemalia approaches and reminds you of the plan. "We'll be up top fighting the Duchess' minions and hopefully keeping her well distracted. Meanwhile, you lot will be down in the cellar looking for her spellbook. When you her my horn blow that's the signal that our assault has begun. I beg you, be swift. The longer you take the more of us will perish, and there'll be no coming back from that. Not with this blasted curse. Hurry. May the gods give you courage and shine their light upon you."
[2:27 PM, 2/2/2018]DMMinutes later, the wind howls a lonely note as Callbrax brings the ship as close as he can to the shore. A small cliff 10 feet high rises up from the rocks. Atop the cliff, you see dense trees and Zaldara's lair poking above.

Callbrax hops into the knee-deep water, motioning for you to grab your equipment and follow. The ocean is cold as death. Callbrax walks onto the shore and touches the cliff wall, muttering an arcane incantation. As he does, the wall parts just a bit, revealing a stone stair going upwards into darkness.

Suddenly a bleat breaks the night that fills your heart with adrenaline and dread. "That's Remalia's horn. Good luck and be quick."
[7:18 PM, 2/2/2018]DMJenny just clued me into a bit of confusion. She was like, "where is Remalia blowing the horn from? Is she not on the boat with us?"

No.
I guess I missed a step. Remalia and her "army" were let off just a little bit earlier. They're stationed on the mainland about 10 feet above you. They were waiting for Callbrax to let you off down below and open a fissure into the lich's cellar. When Remalia sounds the horn her and her forces are already in position up above on the mainland. They're now rushing the upper floors of the tower. You should now storm in.
[8:43 AM, 2/3/2018]RavenRaven’s heart races. She looks at the cat person and says, “Hey Kitty Cat. Think you wannna slink on in first? Sneaky style?”
[9:58 AM, 2/3/2018]KitKit’s gung ho. She sneakily slinks in.
[10:12 AM, 2/3/2018]DMThis would be a good time for me to run something I was thing about past you guys. In our last campaign, I pretty much handled every single die roll, ability check, attack roll, etc… The main reasoning was in order to keep the game moving as fast as possible since we're playing over text and having to add to the number of texts going back and forth might have slowed us down. I've realized two things though: 1. it probably wouldn't really slow anything down since when I ask someone to make some sort of roll it's almost always in response to them saying they want to try and do something. Which means they're right by their phone anyways. And 2. by handling all of the rolls myself, you guys were left not having any idea what your success or failure was based on. I'm thinking it might be worth it to try and have you guys make your own rolls. It'll give you a better sense of agency over your characters not to mention it'll make all those skills and numbers make more sense (eventually). The good news is, you guys on iOS have it easy. In the Fight Club app you only have to tap the skill I'm asking for a check on and it'll automatically roll and add any modifiers you have. Phil has it slightly harder in that he'll need to download a separate die-rolling app and add the modifier himself. So Phil, if I was to say, "make a Stealth check", you would just roll a d20 and add 7 (your Stealth skill modifier) to the result.

Shall we try it? If we find no one's liking it, we can go back to the old way where you just tell me what you want to do and I tell you the outcome.

Sam, go ahead and make a Stealth check.
[10:15 AM, 2/3/2018]KitSo, d20 +6?
[10:17 AM, 2/3/2018]DMExactly. Or just tap the number to the left of where it says Stealth. It'll do it for you.
[10:17 AM, 2/3/2018]KitBoo! 7
[10:17 AM, 2/3/2018]KitThat was super easy though
[10:18 AM, 2/3/2018]DMRight?! Also, let me know whenever you get a natural 1 or 20. So, the die itself without your modifier. In this case it must have been a 1 right?
[10:18 AM, 2/3/2018]KitYes
[10:20 AM, 2/3/2018]DMSo a natural 1 is a Critical Fail meaning even if your modifier that you add to the die would have been enough to be a successful roll, it still ends up being a failure. And the inverse is true for Critical Success.
[10:21 AM, 2/3/2018]KitSo, Kit didn’t make it in?
[10:22 AM, 2/3/2018]DMShe made it in yeah, just clumsily. She trips over random pots and pans. Gotta take Evyn to gymnastics though. I'll describe the room you're in as soon as I'm back.
[10:41 AM, 2/3/2018]DMI have wifi!
[10:42 AM, 2/3/2018]KelranK so I do a stealth check?
[10:45 AM, 2/3/2018]DMOh, if you want to go in with her too. I was assuming everyone else was waiting outside to hear back from her. But at this point she's already made a ton of ruckus, but if there's something in there and you pass your Stealth check it's conceivable that you could still sneak in yourself. Whatever may or may not be in there would be aware of Kit, but you might be able to avoid detection yourself.
[10:45 AM, 2/3/2018]KelranK I will stay out
[10:47 AM, 2/3/2018]DMKit "tip toes" in with reckless abandon.

Drip. Drip. Drip. That hollow sound pierces the silence in this cave as water slowly falls from stalactites. Stale air fills your lungs as you take in the cave. A large, unworked stone column holds up the ceiling. Stout stairs leading up hug the column’s one side while a 5-foot high ledge that leads into darkness appears along the other. Further back, a second set of stairs leads up to a stone door carved with a skull.
[10:48 AM, 2/3/2018]DMYou came from the passage on the right. You're now at the opening of that passage looking into the cave.
[10:49 AM, 2/3/2018]DMSo there's that huge natural column in the middle of the room, a set of stairs leading up towards the north, a short set of stairs just south of the column also heading up (into Z2) and two more passages heading West.
[10:50 AM, 2/3/2018]DMAlso, it's dark as fuck in there, but you have Darkvision.
[10:55 AM, 2/3/2018]KitKit’s quiet as fuck and looks and listens for sounds of life.
[10:55 AM, 2/3/2018]DMDo you stay where you are? Or are you like moving around the room?
[10:56 AM, 2/3/2018]KitShe stays low to the the ground and against the wall, and quickly scans for someone.
[10:56 AM, 2/3/2018]KitDo I have to roll?
[10:56 AM, 2/3/2018]DMYeah, roll for Perception.
[10:57 AM, 2/3/2018]Kit7 (I rolled a 2)
[10:58 AM, 2/3/2018]FrakusHel
[10:58 AM, 2/3/2018]FrakusHelping a friend rebuild his home theatre. Be back this aft.
[10:58 AM, 2/3/2018]DMThat's ok. You can't actually roll lower than your "Passive Perception" score which is the score I use when I want to see whether or not you just passively notice something without even trying. What's your passive perception?
[11:00 AM, 2/3/2018]DMIt's on the third page of your sheet. The Combat page.
[11:01 AM, 2/3/2018]KitOh! Thanks. 12
[11:02 AM, 2/3/2018]DMIt's very brief, and you're not even fully sure if what you heard was real, but for a second you thought you heard a sort of creaking sound coming from the other side of the column. From the direction of Z2 which is 5' above you.
[11:06 AM, 2/3/2018]KitKit looks around for a piece of rock or something small to throw.
[11:06 AM, 2/3/2018]DMPlenty to choose from. You have a rock.
[11:09 AM, 2/3/2018]KitShe throws the rock aiming towards the lower entrance to Z2.
[11:12 AM, 2/3/2018]DMOut of the darkness, two human skeletons come out from behind the column, armed and armored. Their ligaments and bones creak and twist in with unforgettable sounds. One is at the top of the stairs to the south of the column. The other is on the ledge to the north of the column. They raise their shortbows to attack.
[11:12 AM, 2/3/2018]DMTurn order is: Kit, Skeleton 2 (the one to the north), Skeleton 1 (the one to the south).
[11:13 AM, 2/3/2018]DMSkeleton 2 has half-cover as the column obscures it a bit. The other one is fully exposed.
[11:13 AM, 2/3/2018]KitCan I dash after attacking?
[11:15 AM, 2/3/2018]DMYou can always move your full movement speed and attack on any turn, but you also have the Feline Agility ability which lets you double your speed. Once you do that you can't do it again until on one of your turns you don't move at all.
[11:15 AM, 2/3/2018]DMSo you can move 60'.
[11:16 AM, 2/3/2018]KitKit dashes back to the others to enlist their help.
[11:16 AM, 2/3/2018]DMdo you attack first and then run? Or just bolting out of there?
[11:17 AM, 2/3/2018]KitBolt the fuck out of there
[11:18 AM, 2/3/2018]KitI’m a Rogue not a hero
[11:18 AM, 2/3/2018]DMYou drop to all fours and easily sprint out. You hear arrows plink against the stone behind you. You rejoin the others just slightly out of breath.
[11:21 AM, 2/3/2018]Kit“Two skeletons just fired arrows at me!”
[11:25 AM, 2/3/2018]Kit“Be ready! I’m not sure if they followed me.”
[6:39 PM, 2/3/2018]KitKit readies herself for the skeletons by resting her hand on the hilt of her rapier.
[7:34 PM, 2/3/2018]RavenRaven throws back her hood for better visibility and grabs her quarterstaff. “I’m right behind you Kit!” Having spent a few days on the boat with the Tabaxi, Raven has already decided that Kit was her kind of people.
[7:36 PM, 2/3/2018]DMJust gonna wait to hear from everyone else first. What are you all doing? Any particular plan, or just run and gun?
[7:17 AM, 2/4/2018]FrakusFrakus sneers, baring his sharp teeth, and readies his two hand axes. "Only two you say?"
[9:38 AM, 2/4/2018]Raven“Good attitude. I say giant barbarian lizard boy leads us in. Whaddya think?”, Raven whispers to the group.
[9:42 AM, 2/4/2018]FrakusFrakus nods.
[9:55 AM, 2/4/2018]KitKit and Gaz agree. “You first, big guy.”
[9:55 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus"Follow close"
[9:58 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus"Who among you has dark vision?
[10:02 AM, 2/4/2018]Raven“I do”, Raven says
[10:02 AM, 2/4/2018]Kit“I do too. Feel your way through the tunnel and then you’ll enter an open space with a large column. There are stairs that lead up to another level with two sets of tunnels. The skeletons were on the upper level near the column. Be brave. We’re right behind you.”
[10:02 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus"You! Up here with me."
[10:02 AM, 2/4/2018]Raven“Do you?”
[10:06 AM, 2/4/2018]Raven“If you don’t, I can cast a spell to make your axe glow”
[10:13 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus"I cannot see in the dark like you. A glowing axe will do nicely."
[10:14 AM, 2/4/2018]Kit“I’m a cat. I have feline night vision.”
[10:16 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus"Kit and Raven, keep close."
[10:18 AM, 2/4/2018]FrakusFrakus presents one of his axes to Raven. I'd prefer the second one to remain concealable.
[10:24 AM, 2/4/2018]DMShe touches your axe. You see a small circle of light travel up the length of her finger. As it reaches the tip it bursts into a brief flash as it envelops your axe. It then dies down to a less intense, more manageable glow. Your axe gently pulses and flickers like a torch. It's not a very bright light though, only lighting your way well for about 20', and dimly for another 20' beyond that.
[10:26 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus“Thank you Raven.”
[10:32 AM, 2/4/2018]FrakusFrakus slowly, but confidently approaches the entrance of the cave.
[10:32 AM, 2/4/2018]FrakusGlowing axe held out infront of him.
[10:33 AM, 2/4/2018]DMYeah, I'm just waiting to hear back from Phil on whether or not Kelran has other plans maybe. Don't want to just assume.
[10:33 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus“This helps, but I still can’t see very far.”
[10:33 AM, 2/4/2018]Frakus👍🏼
[7:47 PM, 2/4/2018]KelranI will follow in the back and with my dark vision I will make sure nothing surprises us from behind
[9:26 PM, 2/4/2018]DMYou all storm in. You see two skeletons with rotten scraps of armour hanging off their bones. One is partially obscured behind a large column in the middle of the room. The other is at the top of a short stone staircase.
[9:26 PM, 2/4/2018]DMper usual (and news to Phil I imagine), one square = 5'
[9:27 PM, 2/4/2018]DMThe turn order is: Skeleton 2, Raven, Gaz, Kelran, Skeleton 1, Frakus, Kit
[9:29 PM, 2/4/2018]DMSkeleton 2 hops down off the ledge and comes out from behind the column. It fires an arrow from its shortbow at Frakus. The arrow sails wide and splinters into the wall behind him.
[9:37 PM, 2/4/2018]RavenRaven looks up at the skeleton at the top of the stairs and raises her right palm to him. “Fry, motherfucker!” She casts Eldritch Blast.
[9:40 PM, 2/4/2018]DMJenny rolled a 7. The crackling energy blasts the rockface near the skeleton showering it in pebbles. Harmless harmless pebbles.
[9:42 PM, 2/4/2018]RavenShe curses and moves back into the passage closer to the stairwell.
[9:47 PM, 2/4/2018]FrakusFrakus is unaccustomed to seeing magic that up close. He gives Raven a nod.
[9:47 PM, 2/4/2018]DMKelran, you're up. Just to remind you, when we're in turn-based combat, you can move your full movement speed (35' for you), and do an action, which is almost always "attack", but there's a bunch of other things you can do instead of attacking that would count as your action. For now, I'd suggest you just keep it simple and attack (either ranged with your longbow or run right up to one of them and give 'em the old double-shortsword). Also, you don't have to move if you don't want to. And if you DO move, you don't have to do your entire movement distance all at once. You can move a bit, attack, then move again. Break it up however you want.
[9:54 PM, 2/4/2018]KelranKelran pulls out his long bow and launches arrow.
[9:55 PM, 2/4/2018]Kelran#1
[9:59 PM, 2/4/2018]DMTo see if you hit, you roll a d20 and add your attack bonus for your longbow (+7). If you roll higher than or equal to the skeleton's Armor Class (AC) you hit. Also, let me know if the die roll is a natural 1 or 20 (the value of the roll before any modifiers).
[10:00 PM, 2/4/2018]Kelran8+7
[10:02 PM, 2/4/2018]DMA hit! Roll for damage. 1d8 + 5
[10:02 PM, 2/4/2018]Kelran6+5
[10:05 PM, 2/4/2018]DMNice. The arrow shatters several of its ribs nearly knocking it off its feet. It stumbles but grabs hold of the nearby rock face and steadied itself. It beats its chest with its fist in a show of intimidation, but you can tell you really messed it up.
[10:06 PM, 2/4/2018]DMI accidentally skipped Gazefire's turn. Back to him.
[10:06 PM, 2/4/2018]FrakusDid we skip Gaz?
[10:06 PM, 2/4/2018]FrakusRight
[2:38 PM, 2/5/2018]KitWithout anyone seeing, away from the group, Gaz throws up 3 times
[2:39 PM, 2/5/2018]DMoh no!!!
[2:39 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenThat sucks! Did Gaz eat a Minigo today?
[2:40 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusPole polish!
[2:41 PM, 2/5/2018]KitNo, he got on a boat. The boys are now chanting, “Boat + Daddy = barf”.
[2:41 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusOh, poor Gaz!
[2:41 PM, 2/5/2018]KitYaked hard in the ocean. Fish food!
[2:42 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenAwwwww 😢
[2:42 PM, 2/5/2018]Raven🤮
[2:42 PM, 2/5/2018]DMthat's no excuse not to play D&D. Between yacks, ask him what Gaz does.
[2:42 PM, 2/5/2018]KitGaz runs at #1, takes a swipe with his quarterstaff and runs back to the group
[2:42 PM, 2/5/2018]DM:)
[2:42 PM, 2/5/2018]Kit🤮
🤮
🤮
[2:43 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenThat’s the spirit, Gaz! Way to be a team player you gnarly gnome!
[2:43 PM, 2/5/2018]KitICYMI: Gaz runs at #1, takes a swipe with his quarterstaff and runs back to the group
[2:43 PM, 2/5/2018]KitCan you roll for him please?
[2:44 PM, 2/5/2018]DMlol, yup
[2:51 PM, 2/5/2018]DMGaz's equilibrium is messed up. He flails gracelessly at the skeleton. Its embarrassing. You mentioned you were running back to the group, does that mean you want to use your special disengage ability so you don't suffer an opportunity attack, or would you rather use your bonus action to karate chop the skeleton?
[2:54 PM, 2/5/2018]KitGaz puffs up his chest to demonstrate how brave he is and then uses his special disengage ability to scurry back to the others.
[2:55 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusHa!
[2:56 PM, 2/5/2018]DMI'll use this opportunity to fill Phil in on opportunity attacks. Very briefly, if you're within melee distance of someone (5') and you move away from them, the enemy gets a special "reaction" called an opportunity attack where it can squeeze in an attack on you even though it's not its turn. The concept being that everyone's constantly looking for someone to drop their guard and to take advantage of that. Gaz was able to run right up and run away again though because he has a special ability that lets him do that.
[3:00 PM, 2/5/2018]DMThe same skeleton fires a revenge arrow at Gaz's back, but he's way too tiny and nimble. Plus, that skeleton's shattered ribs aren't doing it any favours. A miss. It punches the wall in anger.
[3:01 PM, 2/5/2018]DMFrakus, you're up
[3:23 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusFrakus charges at skelleton #2 with both axes drawn. "Maybe this will brighten your day!"
[3:24 PM, 2/5/2018]DMMake two attack rolls.
[3:25 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakus15 and 20
[3:26 PM, 2/5/2018]DMnatural 20 or the total was 20?
[3:26 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakustwo d20 rolls
[3:26 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakusone was 15 and the other 20
[3:27 PM, 2/5/2018]DMright, but I mean, did the die itself show 20, or that includes your attack bonus modifier
[3:28 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakusnatural
[3:37 PM, 2/5/2018]DMGreat! So two hits. One of them critical. To roll damage, for your first one (your main hand) you roll 1d6+2. For the other one you would normally roll 1d6 (without the +2 bonus), but since it's a crit you roll the dice twice. I'm going with an optional rule for critical hits though in that, instead of rolling both, you only roll one, and the other one is just automatically whatever the highest that die can be. The reason being, with the default rules you guys used to get critical hits that would often still have really low damage since both dice could be 1s...which is confusing. How is that a critical hit?!
[3:37 PM, 2/5/2018]DMFirst hit = 1d6+2
Second hit = 1d6+6
[3:41 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakus5+2
[3:42 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakus5+2 again
[3:42 PM, 2/5/2018]DMNo. How's the second one 5+2? It's 1d6 + 6
[3:42 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakusoh sorry.
[3:43 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakus5+6 then
[3:43 PM, 2/5/2018]DMor, another way of saying it: 2d6 but one of the d6's is automatically the highest value it can be
[3:43 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakuswhy is the 2nd one +6?
[3:44 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusOh, I see. Because of the natural 20?
[3:44 PM, 2/5/2018]DMbecause your second one was a critical hit. You get roll twice the number of dice as usual. But I'm using an optional rule where instead of rolling twice, you just automatically get the max value for the second die
[3:45 PM, 2/5/2018]DMor whatever, we can use the more standard rules. It'll be easier in the future.
[3:46 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusSo, to be clear, I rolled twice and got 5 on both rolls.
[3:46 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenDarren’s new rule is more beneficial...
[3:48 PM, 2/5/2018]DMIt is, but keep in mind it would work both ways. The enemy would get that benefit too. Up to you guys.
[3:51 PM, 2/5/2018]DManyways, we can discuss it next time a crit happens. In the meantime, Frakus crosses his arms in front of him, axe-blades held outwards. He brings his arms together and scissors the skeleton. Its remaining ribs splinter. Its bones roll down the stairs. He dead.
[3:51 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusAgreed.
[3:55 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusFrakus rejoins the group with his glowing axe guiding the way.
[3:58 PM, 2/5/2018]DMI just realized I was describing the wrong one dying. I thought you were attacking the already damaged one at the top of the stairs (#1). No matter though. You're scissor slice was enough to kill the other skeleton in one fell swoop. The fucked-up one at the top of the stairs remains. Kit, you're up.
[4:00 PM, 2/5/2018]KitKit loads up her short bow, takes aim and fires at the skeleton.
[4:01 PM, 2/5/2018]DMRoll it mofo. 1d20 + your attack bonus.
[4:01 PM, 2/5/2018]Kit8+6
[4:02 PM, 2/5/2018]DMKer-plink. That's the sound an arrow makes when it hits rock.
[4:02 PM, 2/5/2018]KitKit sulks
[4:02 PM, 2/5/2018]DMBack to Raven.
[8:53 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenRaven steps forward past Kelran and sighs, “Alright, let’s try this again.” Palm up, Eldritch Blast.
[8:53 PM, 2/5/2018]Raven16, baby!
[8:54 PM, 2/5/2018]DMRoll damage
[8:59 PM, 2/5/2018]Raven7 damage
[9:03 PM, 2/5/2018]DMThe energy bolt blasts it square in the chest vaporizing its putrid scraps of armor into a cloud of purplish crackling dust. The skeleton goes flying into the wall behind it, partially grinding its decayed bones to dust. He dead.
[9:03 PM, 2/5/2018]DMYou guys are out of turn-based time. Do as you please.
[9:05 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenRaven goes back into the passage and whisper-shouts to her bird. “Ash!” He flutters in and perched on her shoulder. “Skeletons”, she mutters to him. “Two of them. Dead now.”
[9:06 PM, 2/5/2018]RavenPerches
[9:07 PM, 2/5/2018]Raven“North or west?”, she asks the posse.
[9:07 PM, 2/5/2018]FrakusHa!
[9:08 PM, 2/5/2018]Frakus"My gut says west" I smell something.
[11:35 AM, 2/6/2018]FrakusWith his glowing axe lighting the way, Frakus heads west into the darkness.
[11:37 AM, 2/6/2018]DMAs you cross the threshold into the "room" on the west side a voice from the darkness whispers with the dry rattle of death and malice. “By mistake or by foolishness, you have come too far. Your soul will be used to feed my endlessness.” You see no source for the voice.
[11:38 AM, 2/6/2018]DMTwo passages open to the west of you. A flight of stairs leading up is to the north.
[11:42 AM, 2/6/2018]Frakus“You guys coming? It’s nice and cozy in here.”
[11:47 AM, 2/6/2018]KelranKerlan goes west and catches up with Frakus.
[11:47 AM, 2/6/2018]DMthat happens
[11:48 AM, 2/6/2018]Frakus“Did you hear that voice?”
[11:48 AM, 2/6/2018]DMeveryone heard it
[11:52 AM, 2/6/2018]Frakus“I don’t think we should split up. Let’s wait for the others.”
[12:04 PM, 2/6/2018]KitKit and Gaz hold hands and follow the other two.
[12:05 PM, 2/6/2018]DMI have to assume Raven's not staying by herself. You're all together in Z2.
[12:54 PM, 2/6/2018]RavenYa, Raven’s there too. “That’s just the sort of thing a Skin book might say”, Raven muses. Her raven is restless and flutters his wings.
[12:57 PM, 2/6/2018]KitGaz leans close to Kit and whispers,
“I think it would be better if we just surrendered.”
[12:58 PM, 2/6/2018]RavenRaven goes with this. "Ya, the goblin is right", she says a bit loudly. "We surrender. Tell us where to find you Skin book!" (roll for deception??)
[1:00 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus gives her a WTF? look. "What are you doing?"
[1:01 PM, 2/6/2018]DMRoll for deception
[1:02 PM, 2/6/2018]Ravenit's a 16
[1:08 PM, 2/6/2018]DMThere's no answer
[1:11 PM, 2/6/2018]RavenRaven tries to cajole it again. "Book, I long for you to share the secrets of your eternal power with me. I am the apprentice of a once great warlock. I've heard of your power. In turn, I can share my power with you. Call to me again." (roll again)
[1:12 PM, 2/6/2018]DMno, there's still no answer
[1:13 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus"Enough!"
[1:13 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus"Let's keep going."
[1:14 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus proceeds towards the south-west most passage.
[1:14 PM, 2/6/2018]Raven"North or west?"
[1:14 PM, 2/6/2018]DMtoo late. Frakus decides on action! Enough deliberation. He marches on.
[2:13 PM, 2/6/2018]KitKit shrugs at Gaz and the two follow Frakus.
[2:18 PM, 2/6/2018]KelranKelran being a good follower and tagging along.
[2:23 PM, 2/6/2018]DMYou wend your way through a narrow corridor which opens into a small "room". The light from Frakus' axe is caught and refracted hundreds of times by dozens of large pink crystals coming out of the walls and ceiling. It's super sparkly and pretty.
[2:24 PM, 2/6/2018]KitKit is awestruck. She loves sparkley and pretty. She touches the walls to see if the crystals come off.
[2:32 PM, 2/6/2018]DMThey're wedged in pretty good, but you can feel a bit of wiggle. A good tug ought to get it out.
[2:33 PM, 2/6/2018]KitYoink! Kit gives one’s a good pull.
[2:33 PM, 2/6/2018]DMRemember what killed the cat? Would you go ahead and roll a Charisma Savings Throw please.
[2:34 PM, 2/6/2018]DM(Your savings throw modifiers are listed to the right of your main abilities on p2)
[2:34 PM, 2/6/2018]Kit9
[2:37 PM, 2/6/2018]DMUh oh. As you break off the crystal its glow grows much brighter and starts to vibrate in your hands. The vibrations become more and more intense. You feel a pulling sensation in your stomach like a rope connected to your spine is tugging on you. Then, the world spins away from you. To the rest of you there's a brief "pop" sound as Kit pops out of existence. (Separate thread for Kit now).
[2:59 PM, 2/6/2018]Raven"Oh shit", Raven whispers.
[2:59 PM, 2/6/2018]Raven"Crystals bad"
[3:04 PM, 2/6/2018]Raven"Kit! Kit", raven calls, wondering if she's just turned invisible.
[3:06 PM, 2/6/2018]DMshe doesn't answer
[3:30 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus"By the fangs of Semuanya!"
[3:31 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusDid she leave anything behind? Clothes, equipment? i.e. is she naked now?
[3:32 PM, 2/6/2018]DMnope. Every trace of her is gone save a small tuft of hair
[3:32 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus examines the spot Kit was standing in.
[3:32 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusOk.
[3:32 PM, 2/6/2018]DMyou see her footprints
[3:32 PM, 2/6/2018]DMnot moving I mean. Just the footprints of where she was standing before she poofed
[3:32 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus continues to examine the rest of the space.
[3:34 PM, 2/6/2018]DMother than the shiny purple crystals, there's little else of note. The room opens to another short passageway to the north, which itself branches east and west. To the west you can see the bottom step of a set of stairs.
[3:34 PM, 2/6/2018]Kelrankerlan moves ahead to the west to see where the stairs go.
[3:35 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusI wonder if we'd all go to the same place if we grabbed a crystal. Did the crystal she was holding also disappear?
[3:35 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusI guess we don't actually know she went somewhere else. She could be dead...
[3:36 PM, 2/6/2018]DMit did. Kerlan goes towards the stairwell. Its a short climb up ending in a large stone door. It is carved in the image of a kraken pulling two halves of a broken ship into the sea.
[3:38 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus follows Kerlan. "Don't go too far. We just lost one of our Dark See-ers, we don't want to lose another."
[3:39 PM, 2/6/2018]DMYou're with him at the door.
[3:40 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus"Interesting door. Inviting."
[3:40 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus examines the door's hardware, hinges, handle, knocker, etc...
[3:41 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusBut touches nothing
[3:43 PM, 2/6/2018]DMroll and Investigation check
[3:43 PM, 2/6/2018]DMan
[3:44 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFukc!
[3:44 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus2-1
[3:44 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakusso 1
[3:45 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus"Door, what door?"
[3:45 PM, 2/6/2018]Kelrancan Kelran investigate now
[3:46 PM, 2/6/2018]DMwhat?
[3:50 PM, 2/6/2018]DMsure, same thing. Roll a d20 and add your Investigation modifier
[3:50 PM, 2/6/2018]KelranKerlan takes his turn investigating door
[3:50 PM, 2/6/2018]Kelran9+1
[3:52 PM, 2/6/2018]DMYou see nothing of note on the door.
[3:52 PM, 2/6/2018]DMother than the previously mentioned kraken carving pulling apart a boat
[4:00 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusFrakus knocks on the door three times with the butt end of one of his hammers.
[4:01 PM, 2/6/2018]DMbefore you do that I just want to see if Raven or Gaz are doing anything while you and Kelran were investigating the door
[4:04 PM, 2/6/2018]KitGaz wonders where the beautiful cat woman went. He wonders if she might have popped behind the door. He checks the door out. (Can you roll for him?)
[4:08 PM, 2/6/2018]DM13. Gaz notices nothing particularly remarkable.
[4:08 PM, 2/6/2018]KitHe retreats to hide behind Raven.
[4:11 PM, 2/6/2018]DMNote to Phil: you might be wondering at this point, "we've been making these rolls...how do we know what'a good roll?!" Answer: you don't. Not really. Every type your making some sort of roll (either a skill check or an attack roll or a savings throw, etc..) you're always rolling against a particular "Difficulty Check" or DC. That's the number you have to roll equal to or higher than to be sucessful. You never know what the DC for a particular thing is though. But the higher roll the better. Your Armour Class for example, all that is is another DC.
[4:12 PM, 2/6/2018]Kelrank
[6:17 PM, 2/6/2018]DMOn behalf of Jenny, Raven stealthily goes and checks to see if the door is locked.
[6:20 PM, 2/6/2018]DMUpon touching the door, spectral tentacles materialize and lash out at Raven, Frakus, and Kelran. I need each of you to make a Dexterity savings throw.
[6:23 PM, 2/6/2018]DMAre you all starting to appreciate just how many rolls I made on your behalf?! Roll your own goddamned selves!!
[6:28 PM, 2/6/2018]DMJenny rolls a 9.
[6:29 PM, 2/6/2018]Kelran20
[6:29 PM, 2/6/2018]DMDaaamn
[6:37 PM, 2/6/2018]Frakus22
[6:38 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusI clicked dexterity modifier right?
[6:38 PM, 2/6/2018]DMTo the right of it. Saving throw.
[6:39 PM, 2/6/2018]DMBut if the modifier is the same either way then it's fine.
[6:40 PM, 2/6/2018]DMThe difference being a regular ability check is when you're explicitly trying to do something. Whereas a savings throw is when something is happening TO you.
[6:40 PM, 2/6/2018]KelranI think I did it wrong. What am I supposed to do?
[6:41 PM, 2/6/2018]DMI don't have your app in front of me so I can't point you exactly where, but your Dext Savings Throw modifier is +7. So you roll a d20+7
[6:42 PM, 2/6/2018]DMFrakus is +2
[6:42 PM, 2/6/2018]FrakusSame
[6:42 PM, 2/6/2018]Kelran12+7
[6:45 PM, 2/6/2018]DMFrakus and Kelran nimbly dodge out of the way of th ghostly tentacles. Raven however is slammed and pinned against the wall. She's restrained, meaning she can't move, any attacks against her are with advantage, and any attacks she makes are with disadvantage. She can try another saving throw at the end of each of her turns to try and get free.
[6:46 PM, 2/6/2018]DMRolling initiative. I'll keep rolling initiative myself because that's a pain in the ass and I have an app that does it for me.
[6:46 PM, 2/6/2018]Raven"Argh!"
[6:49 PM, 2/6/2018]DMGaz, Raven, Frakus, Kelran
[6:49 PM, 2/6/2018]DMGaz, you're up
[6:49 PM, 2/6/2018]Raven"Gaz, help!"
[8:53 AM, 2/7/2018]KitGaz whacks at a tentacle with his stick (please roll)
[9:14 AM, 2/7/2018]DMHe hits the tentacle, but instead of actually making contact it's more like his staff passes through it with just the slightest bit of friction. Like hitting a thick sticky fog. He can also try punching it if he likes. Or use disengage to back away safely from the tentacles.
[9:19 AM, 2/7/2018]KitGaz tried wrestling it
[9:19 AM, 2/7/2018]Kit*tries
[9:21 AM, 2/7/2018]DMAs he makes contact with it, again he kind of passes through it. He feels the stinging, nauseous feeling of dark necrotic energy burn his skin for 1 damage.
[9:24 AM, 2/7/2018]DMRaven's turn. Make a Dext saving throw to try and break free.
[9:27 AM, 2/7/2018]DMShe rolls an 18. Raven manages to break free from its grasp. Before she does so though she takes 5 necrotic damage. Half her life has been leeched from her by the tentacles ghostly suckers.
[9:28 AM, 2/7/2018]DMAs soon as she's free, the tentacles retreat back into the door and disappear.
[9:29 AM, 2/7/2018]RavenRaven is shaken by the ghostly encounter. She casts Armour of Agathys to protect herself for the next hour.
[9:33 AM, 2/7/2018]DMMystical semi-transparent armour forms around her. Freezing cold steam rises from her.
[9:34 AM, 2/7/2018]DMNow that you guys know there's definitely something up with the door, you can always try another Investigation check on it. You'd make it with advantage since you know for sure there's something afoot.
[9:35 AM, 2/7/2018]DMIt's Frakus's turn.
[10:15 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFrakus inspects the door.
[10:15 AM, 2/7/2018]Frakus20-1 (19)
[10:21 AM, 2/7/2018]DMYou notice a small arcane rune carved within the image of the kraken. Make an Arcana check to see how much you know about the rune itself.
[10:24 AM, 2/7/2018]Frakus14-1 (13)
[10:25 AM, 2/7/2018]DMYou believe that scratching out the run with a weapon or tool will most likely disable the trap.
[10:25 AM, 2/7/2018]DMrune
[10:25 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusHmmm
[10:25 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusOk, I’ll bite
[10:26 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFrakus tries to scratch out the rune with his axe.
[10:26 AM, 2/7/2018]DMyou scratch it out
[10:27 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFrakus attempts to open the door.
[10:29 AM, 2/7/2018]DMIt's heavy and opens creakily, but without issue. It opens into a narrow hallway about 25' long. At the long end of the hallway you can sort of see how it opens up into some other kind of room. Immediately to your left are two other doors.
[10:30 AM, 2/7/2018]Raven"Good stuff, Freakus!", Raven exclaims.
[10:31 AM, 2/7/2018]DMFreakus! lol
[10:31 AM, 2/7/2018]Raven"Let's see if Kit's behind one of those doors"
[10:31 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusI like it
[10:31 AM, 2/7/2018]DMwhich one do you try?
[10:32 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFirst door to the left.
[10:32 AM, 2/7/2018]RavenRaven stealthily tiptoes to the first one on the left
[10:32 AM, 2/7/2018]RavenShe rap tap taps, every so softly. "Kit", she whispers. "Are you in there?"
[10:32 AM, 2/7/2018]DMno answer
[10:33 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFrakus tries to open the door.
[10:34 AM, 2/7/2018]DMIt opens into a small room. The nauseating stench of this room makes your stomach do backflips. Blood is sprayed across the walls and coats the floor. Bones are piled high in the back corner of the room and pieces of humanoid bodies are everywhere. The source of this mutilation becomes clear as a purple-skinned undead with long claws gnaws on the arm of a halfling. The horrid creature smiles a gore-coated grin at your arrival.
[10:34 AM, 2/7/2018]DMrolling initiative
[10:34 AM, 2/7/2018]Raven"Yikes! Close the door!", raven backs up into the corridor~
[10:35 AM, 2/7/2018]DMtoo late. The ghoul attacks!
[10:35 AM, 2/7/2018]Ravendammit. he's first in initiative?
[10:35 AM, 2/7/2018]DMturn order is Ghoul, Frakus, Kelran, Gaz, Raven
[10:39 AM, 2/7/2018]DMIt rushes towards Frakus and syncs its teeth into the nape of his scaly neck. A critical hit! Now's the time for us to decide how you want to handle critical hits since it would apply to the enemy as well.
1. The standard, default way where you just roll twice the number of dice you're supposed to. i.e.: if the normal damage is 1d6+2, you roll 2d6+2 (the +2 doesn't get doubled, just the dice).
2. The slightly more exciting way where the extra dice automatically roll their highest number. i.e.: 1d6+2 would become 1d6+6+2
[10:40 AM, 2/7/2018]DM2 makes for better, more satisfying crits, but it's more dangerous too since the monsters get that.
[10:41 AM, 2/7/2018]DM1 is fine, but it's totally possible to end up with less than satisfying crits. 2d6+2 could end up being as low as 4. Weak sauce.
[10:41 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusI’d go with 2.
[10:42 AM, 2/7/2018]Raveni vote for 2, but it's not my neck on the line
[10:42 AM, 2/7/2018]Ravenoh good
[10:42 AM, 2/7/2018]DMeveryone on board with that?
[10:45 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusLet’s go with 2 for this attack and we can switch to 1 if the others don’t agree.
[10:45 AM, 2/7/2018]Kelranyes 2
[10:46 AM, 2/7/2018]DMalright, where 3 out of 5 wins anyways. Don't need to wait for Sam and Dave. 2 it is! Brave man.
[10:46 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusI’m a barbarian!
[10:46 AM, 2/7/2018]DMThe ghoul deals a devastating 12 damage to Frakus as it pierces a major artery!
[10:47 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusShit. Down to 3hp
[10:47 AM, 2/7/2018]Frakus“Gurgle gurgle”
[10:50 AM, 2/7/2018]DMFrakus, you're up
[11:03 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFrakus temporarily takes his hand away from his bleeding neck, looks down at the blood, and is immediately overwhelmed with white hot rage.
[11:03 AM, 2/7/2018]Ravenoooooh! yay!!!
[11:04 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusHe lashes at the ghoul with both axes!
[11:06 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusHe tries to scream as he does, but all that comes out is the horrible gargling sound of blood in his esophagus.
[11:07 AM, 2/7/2018]DMOn the third page of your sheet, mark that you've spent a Rage. You can just touch it and hit decrease. Make a separate attack roll for each of your axes and add an additional +2 to them. They're also both with advantage. Roll each one twice and take the higher of the two rolls for each.
[11:09 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusSo roll four times?
[11:10 AM, 2/7/2018]DMYeah, and each one of them gets an extra +2 on top of your normal attack bonus modifier. So you roll twice for your right axe (take the highest roll), twice for your left axe.
[11:10 AM, 2/7/2018]DMand let me know if that actual die roll (not with adjustments) for either of them is a natural 20 or 1.
[11:11 AM, 2/7/2018]Frakus13+4+2 (19)
[11:12 AM, 2/7/2018]Frakus8+4+2 (14)
[11:13 AM, 2/7/2018]DMsorry, the +2 I mentioned was for the damage roll. Not the attack roll.
[11:13 AM, 2/7/2018]DMmade a mistake.
[11:14 AM, 2/7/2018]DMso was that the higher of your two rolls for both weapons? Or is that just two rolls in total so far?
[11:14 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusHigher of each
[11:16 AM, 2/7/2018]DMok, so it's actually 17 and 12 (not 19 and 14). Sorry about that. But regardless, both axes hit! Now you get the +2 I mentioned earlier. Your right one is 1d6+2+2, the other is 1d6+2.
[11:18 AM, 2/7/2018]DMroll it!
[11:19 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusStill four rolls?
[11:19 AM, 2/7/2018]DMno
[11:19 AM, 2/7/2018]DMjust two. Damage roll for each.
[11:21 AM, 2/7/2018]Frakus6+2+2 (10)
1+2 (3)
[11:23 AM, 2/7/2018]DMYou fuck it up pretty good. Your axes sync down into its shoulders right by the neck. It howls and bares its teeth and long purple tongue at you. Do you move? You're kind of blocking the doorway there. Just keep in mind it'll get an opportunity attack on you if you move away.
[11:34 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusRage retreat!
[11:36 AM, 2/7/2018]FrakusFrakus clears the way for the next attacker.
[11:37 AM, 2/7/2018]DMAs you turn your back on it it swipes at you with its claws just narrowly grazing you with the tips. No damage.
[11:38 AM, 2/7/2018]DMKelran, you up
[1:24 PM, 2/7/2018]KelranKelran goes in for the kill with his short swords
[3:47 PM, 2/7/2018]DMSorry. Make two attack rolls.
[7:03 PM, 2/7/2018]Kelran19+7
17+7
[7:03 PM, 2/7/2018]FrakusDamn!
[7:04 PM, 2/7/2018]DMroll damage. I don't have your sheet in front of me, but it's only your main hand weapon that gets the "+ whatever".
[7:05 PM, 2/7/2018]KelranMy short sword has a+7
[7:07 PM, 2/7/2018]DMno, that's your attack modifier. That's the number you roll to the d20 to see if you hit. Your damage roll is 1d6+5 for your main hand. 1d6 for your off-hand
[7:07 PM, 2/7/2018]DMboth hit. Roll damage for each
[7:09 PM, 2/7/2018]KelranK so
5+5
5
[7:33 PM, 2/7/2018]DMI lift Phil's virtual dice into the light and peer at them with deep scrutiny. "Hmmmm. 00000101 and 00000101. The bits seem fine. I'll allow it."
[7:33 PM, 2/7/2018]DM15 damage! A killing blow indeed. You want to describe your own finishing move?
[7:34 PM, 2/7/2018]FrakusTeabag that fucker!
[9:38 AM, 2/8/2018]DMI've been instructed to describe it myself. Kelran drives one sword upwards into its thorax straight through its upper back. The ghoul grabs onto his shoulders and pulls itself closer to him screeching right in his face. Its long blood-soaked tongue licks his cheek. Without breaking eye contact Kerlan's other sword comes up and bisects the ghoul's head at the jaw line. Its tongue lols in the open crevice as it gurgles its final death rattle.
[9:38 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusNice!
[9:42 AM, 2/8/2018]DMyou guys are out of turn-based time. Do as you wish. You're standing at the entrance of the small room the ghoul was feasting in. Blood is sprayed all across the walls and the floor is completely covered in it. Bones and rotten scraps of humanoid bodies are in a pile in the corner. It stinks something fierce.
[9:43 AM, 2/8/2018]DMIn the northwest corner of the room is another door. The hallway you're in continue north and there's another door right beside the one you're standing in the entrance of.
[9:43 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus enters the room and starts sifting through the bones and guts.
[9:44 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusHe is thoroughly grossed out, but as a barbarian, doesn't show it.
[9:49 AM, 2/8/2018]DMAs you step into the blood something doesn't feel quite right. You can't quite put your finger on it but you feel sort of queasy. It doesn't bother you enough to stop you from searching through the bones though, but there's something nagging you that there's something fishy with this blood. You know, other than the fact that it's not supposed to be all over the place.
[9:49 AM, 2/8/2018]DMMake an Investigation check as you search through the bones.
[9:50 AM, 2/8/2018]Frakus9-1 (8)
[9:50 AM, 2/8/2018]DMYou find rotten meat.
[9:51 AM, 2/8/2018]DMYour hands stink.
[9:51 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus tosses it a Gaz. "You might enjoy this."
[9:56 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusDM, would you say that the nagging feeling is satisfied after finding that meat?
[9:57 AM, 2/8/2018]DMNope. It's more like, you've stepped in blood before, but this is the first time where you've felt kind of nauseated by it.
[9:57 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusHmmm
[9:58 AM, 2/8/2018]Frakus"I can't put my finger on it, but there's something off in here. Anyone else get that feeling?"
[10:31 AM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven pushes into the room to see what Frakus is talking about.
[10:31 AM, 2/8/2018]Raven(rolls a 15)
[10:31 AM, 2/8/2018]DMhis Investigation check was because he was searching through the bones. Is that what you're doing? What kind of roll was that?
[10:32 AM, 2/8/2018]Ravendoing the same, she looks around, scooches stuff with her boot
[10:35 AM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven looks at the walls for clues, and moves things around to see if there's anything around under the bones or on the floor. She sniffs the air only to cough and gag.
[10:37 AM, 2/8/2018]DMIn the bone pile Raven digs out a small bag drenched in blood. Inside is 25gp.
[10:38 AM, 2/8/2018]Ravennoice
[10:38 AM, 2/8/2018]RavenNothing else? She's really smearing the wreckage aside here...
[10:39 AM, 2/8/2018]DMYou really tear the place apart. Bones and meat go flying. Nothing else.
[10:39 AM, 2/8/2018]DMYou too feel kind of queasy though as you walk around in the blood.
[10:40 AM, 2/8/2018]RavenBarf. Even Raven's crow wants nothing to do with the rotting carrion. "This looks like a back passage", raven says motioning to the door at the back of the room. "Maybe we'll be safer moving on from here"
[10:42 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusAhh, not animated.
[10:42 AM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“Yes, let’s move on.”
[10:42 AM, 2/8/2018]DMyeah, you need to go through the WhatsApp menu where the emojis are if you want a gif. Super lame.
[10:43 AM, 2/8/2018]DMand they don't even automatically animate! Argh.
[10:44 AM, 2/8/2018]DMlet's wait to hear from Gaz and Kelran. Maybe they want to try somewhere else.
[10:45 AM, 2/8/2018]DMJust a reminder for everyone to check your HP. Raven's not doing great and Frakus is bleeding out something fierce. (You have healing potions cough cough)
[10:46 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusGood idea
[10:46 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus downs his one and only potion of healing.
[10:47 AM, 2/8/2018]Ravenwhat? I have 10
[10:47 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFor reals?
[10:47 AM, 2/8/2018]Ravenmy spell lasts an hour
[10:47 AM, 2/8/2018]Ravennot potions, HP
[10:48 AM, 2/8/2018]DMoh right. Yeah, I mean you have 5 real HP and 5 temp on top of that. OK. You're "okay" for now. Ryan, cross the potion off your list and roll 2d4+2 to see how much you heal for.
[10:49 AM, 2/8/2018]FrakusDone. Off to a meeting. Laters.
[11:59 AM, 2/8/2018]Frakus1+3+2
[12:00 PM, 2/8/2018]DMk, add 6 to your HP
[12:00 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus6 Added to my sheet
[2:05 PM, 2/8/2018]Gaz(Is Gaz with the group presently?)
[2:06 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYou're right outside in the hall. Frakus and Raven are in the room of blood.
[2:08 PM, 2/8/2018]GazThe weird blood ...
[2:10 PM, 2/8/2018]GazSo they're in Z6 with an unexplored door just up the hall?
[2:11 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYup
[2:11 PM, 2/8/2018]GazAre we in "turn" mode?
[2:12 PM, 2/8/2018]DMNope
[2:12 PM, 2/8/2018]GazThen Gaz approaches the door and listens for sounds inside
[2:13 PM, 2/8/2018]DMWhich one? The one in the hallway or the one in Z6?
[2:13 PM, 2/8/2018]GazThe hallway.
Z6 is gross
[2:14 PM, 2/8/2018]DMIndeed. Roll for Perception.
[2:14 PM, 2/8/2018]GazAnd I'm in the hallway already
[2:15 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYup
[4:46 PM, 2/8/2018]GazPerception : 8 (+2) ... 10
[4:47 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYou hear "something" but can't quite make it out. Kind of just like a constant white noise.
[4:48 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz checks to see if the door is locked.
[4:49 PM, 2/8/2018]DMIf it's not are you opening the door or just pushing it on it to check if it moves?
[4:51 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz walks back to the doorway to the blood room.

"Hey, you guys. I'm gonna open this other door out here. Let you know what happens."
[4:53 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYou open the door to a small room. A copper taste fills your mouth as the room is filled with fine red mist. At the center of the chamber, a blood-soaked statue of a horned and winged demon vomits a fountain of blood into the air, gathering in a bubbling pool around his legs. Are you going into the room or just standing in the doorway?
[5:02 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz silently mouths "Oh shit" to himself and quietly, ever so quietly, closes the door.
[5:07 PM, 2/8/2018]DMlol. k
[5:11 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz walks back to the so-called blood room, thinking they will probably need a new name for it now that he's seen this other one.

"Um. I think you guys will want to see this."
[5:29 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven“Maybe tell us what you saw?”...
[5:35 PM, 2/8/2018]GazLike a statue throwing up blood, like spraying blood all over, like a bath. Of blood. A literal blood bath. And figurative. Lots of blood. And a statue."
[5:37 PM, 2/8/2018]Gaz"Come see."

Gaz excitedly runs back to the door. He waits for the others.
[5:37 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven“Hm”, Raven says trying not to sound freaked out. Her raven twitters and chuffs, ruffling her hair.
[5:37 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven“Maybe we should skip the blood fountain demon?”
[5:38 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven“Was Kit in there?”
[5:39 PM, 2/8/2018]GazI didn't see. She might be covered in blood.
[5:43 PM, 2/8/2018]Gaz"We can always come back, I guess."

Gaz shrugs, a bit disappointed that his dramatic reveal won't occur.
[5:45 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz sulks up the hall to Z8.

He kicks little stones on the floor as he goes.
[5:45 PM, 2/8/2018]DMwhat's everyone else doing?
[6:03 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“I want to see it!”
[6:04 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“And maybe there’s more gold coins in there.”
[6:09 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus examines the door in Z6.
[6:10 PM, 2/8/2018]DMIt's a stone door with a brass loop for a handle. It doesn't appear to be locked.
[6:11 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus opens the door.
[6:12 PM, 2/8/2018]DMyou see exactly what I described to Dave but from another angle. There's a yucky acrid taste on your tongue as you aspirate a fine mist of blood. Are you literally just standing at the door or do you go in?
[6:12 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusHe enters.
[6:13 PM, 2/8/2018]DMthat happens. Nothing happens.
[6:14 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusAm I wading in blood or is it more of a puddle around the statue?
[6:15 PM, 2/8/2018]DMthe floor is covered here the same as it was in the other room but it's not deep. The fountain itself is surrounded by a 5' radius pool about 2' deep. It's filled with blood.
[6:17 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus looks around for anything noteworthy. He uses his glowing axe to illuminate surfaces as he makes his way around the room.
[6:18 PM, 2/8/2018]DMroll for perception
[6:18 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven ties a handkerchief around her face to cover her node and mouth. She instructs Ash to wait outside. She steps into the bloodroom too.
[6:18 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus10
[6:19 PM, 2/8/2018]DMFrakus thinks to himself, "nothing special in here".
[6:20 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“Totally normal death room if you ask me”
[6:20 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“Wouldn’t you say, Raven?”
[6:20 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven moves about the room looking for anything interesting or unusual.
[6:22 PM, 2/8/2018]DMShe rolls a 10. Raven too thinks this is an otherwise unremarkable demon statue blood fountain room. Seen one you seen 'me all.
[6:23 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus gives the statue a knock with the butt end of his axe as he leaves the room.
[6:23 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz walks back to the statue room. He looks inside at the others.

"Hey. Why isn't the blood getting deeper? Is it draining somewhere?"
[6:25 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus looks down at his bloody feet.
[6:26 PM, 2/8/2018]DMThe statue has no reaction. As Frakus and his glowing axe leave the room it plunges back into darkness. Raven and Gaz, with their darkvision, now instantly notice a glow coming from within the pool of blood in the fountain.
[6:28 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven moves closer to the glow to inspect it.
[6:29 PM, 2/8/2018]DMShe sees a glowing gem sitting at the bottom of the fountain.
[6:29 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenShe pokes it out of the blood with her quarterstaff
[6:31 PM, 2/8/2018]DMNot a super easy thing to do as it's a round fountain with no corners. Roll for Dexterity.
[6:33 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenLe sigh. It’s a 5.
[6:34 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYou scooch it up onto the end of the staff and try to shimmy it up the wall of the fountain but the churning blood knocks it off right away.
[6:36 PM, 2/8/2018]GazGaz says, "Stick the glowing tip of your axe into the well and touch it to the jewel."

He snickers to himself.
[6:37 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus ignores the goblin.
[6:43 PM, 2/8/2018]DMDM sidebar: Jenny asked a good question earlier when she was searching the room and she had to make a perception check. She rolled low enough that she (Jenny) knows she failed. Kind of impossible not to metagame when you know what your dice rolls are. So she's like, "I'm really looking hard though, can I check again?" Excellent question! There's some skill checks that you can make again and again, and others where it wouldn't make sense to do it more than once. For ex: you try and lie your way past a guard. If you fail the deception it's not like you can try and lie again. Same with Perception. If you look around a room and "see nothing special", you as a player might have a hunch that something's definitely up, but your character is already convinced there's nothing there. An exception happened not too long ago when some of you made investigation checks on that trapped kraken door. You all failed that check initially so it wouldn't make sense to let you check again. Your character is convinced there's nothing of note. But then the tentacles came out and so obviously there's something up with this door. Hence letting you check it out again.

This brings us to "taking a 20". There's some tasks that, given enough time and it's technically possible for your character to do, you can accomplish anything. So Raven failing on scooching up the gen doesn't mean that she can't just try again and again. You say you're taking a 20 meaning you just keep trying again and again until you succeed (roll a 20). Obviously this doesn't make sense if you're in a time sensitive situation like combat.

Sidebar dismissed.
[6:44 PM, 2/8/2018]DMOne more note. I'm obviously not going to make you do Perception and investigation checks only when there's something to find. I'll make you roll them anytime you're looking for anything, even if there's nothing to be found. Otherwise, metagaming becomes impossible to avoid.
[6:52 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusMakes sense.
[6:53 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven fries again
[6:53 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven*tries
[6:53 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven18
[6:55 PM, 2/8/2018]DMShe manages to get to the edge and flips it to the ground. As the blood drips off it you see it's clearly a very different kind of gen than the one that evaporated Kit. That was a rough, more natural crystal. This is a carefully cut gem. It's also a different colour.
[6:57 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven puts a leather glove on and palms the gem. Pretty. She puts it in her bag.
[6:58 PM, 2/8/2018]DMEven through the glove you can feel magic emanating from it.
[7:00 PM, 2/8/2018]DMIn case some of you don't remember from the last campaign (and new info for Phil), it's usually pretty obvious when you're touching something magical. But that doesn't mean you know what it does. You would either to cast a spell on it (like Identify) to immediately know what it does, or barring that, you need to spend a short rest concentrating on it after which all of its properties will become known to you.
[7:01 PM, 2/8/2018]GazNo metagaming!
[7:01 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenI’ll concentrate on it as soon as we find Kit
[7:01 PM, 2/8/2018]DMWhat?!
[7:01 PM, 2/8/2018]DMWho?
[7:01 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenAnd the Skin Book
[7:02 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“What’s metagaming?”
[7:02 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFood fight!
[7:03 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusFrakus throws his bloody shoe at Gaz.
[7:03 PM, 2/8/2018]DMExplaining core concepts of the games does not a metagame make!
[7:14 PM, 2/8/2018]GazYou're doing it again!!
[7:15 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusDon’t you have a boat to get to?
[7:16 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus😁
[7:17 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenTo Z8!
[7:18 PM, 2/8/2018]DMSuggestion or you're going?
[7:20 PM, 2/8/2018]KelranKelran wants to move on to z8. He can't handle seeing so much blood and has been vomiting in the hallway this whole time. He takes off in front of everyone to z8
[7:21 PM, 2/8/2018]DMThat's what he was doing!
[7:23 PM, 2/8/2018]KelranIs gaz already there or still walking toward z8?
[7:24 PM, 2/8/2018]DMhe's not there. Raven is still in the blood fountain room, Gaz is in the doorway, you and Frakus are in the hall.
[7:25 PM, 2/8/2018]DMoh wait, is Gaz there? Dave, I'm not sure if you actually went up that way or if you just suggested it
[7:31 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven is eager to leave the blood fountain room too. She heads to z8
[7:38 PM, 2/8/2018]DMYou head north. As you you leave the bloody floor and bits of blood wipe off with each footstep you feel less and less nauseous. Whatever was up with that blood doesn't seem to affect you now that you've left it. Continuing north you reach a t-bone hallway. This crumbling hall has a large curve and the stench of rotten eggs coming from cracks in the ceiling. A gross duet of gnashing teeth and guttural throat sounds comes from around the bend. Two ghouls lurk in the room around the bend and hear you approach. Also, the egg stench burns your lungs. I need you all to make Constitution Savings Throws.
[7:39 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus10. Calculated
[7:43 PM, 2/8/2018]Kelran9
[7:43 PM, 2/8/2018]Kelran+1
[7:50 PM, 2/8/2018]RavenRaven is wearing a handkerchief over her nose and mouth!
[7:51 PM, 2/8/2018]Frakus“Mmmm. Smells like home.”
[8:16 PM, 2/8/2018]DMRaven's handerkchief is only rated safe up to 10 microns. Roll it.
[8:16 PM, 2/8/2018]FrakusLol
[8:21 PM, 2/8/2018]Gaz6 + 0
[8:54 PM, 2/8/2018]Raven17
[8:58 PM, 2/8/2018]DMRaven, Kelran, and Frakus sputter and weeze a moment but manage to catch their breath. Gaz however practically coughs up a lung as he succumbs to the effects of the noxious gas. His head spins from the toxic fumes. He's now "poisoned". All attack rolls and ability checks are done with disadvantage.
[8:59 PM, 2/8/2018]DMRolling initiative.
[9:00 PM, 2/8/2018]DMKelran, Frakus, Gaz, Ghoul 2, Raven, Ghoul 1

Kelran, you're up.
[8:32 AM, 2/9/2018]Kelran16+2
[8:44 AM, 2/9/2018]DMWhat?
[8:44 AM, 2/9/2018]DMWhat are you actually doing?
[8:44 AM, 2/9/2018]Kelranyou said roll initiative?
[8:45 AM, 2/9/2018]KelranI have hard time with this rolling :(
[8:45 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusS’ok. That’s something the DM does.
[8:46 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusTo determine who goes in what order
[8:46 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusYou’re up to attack if you want.
[8:49 AM, 2/9/2018]DMAh gotcha. Yeah, sorry. I wasn't actually asking anyone for that roll. It's the one I do myself just because it's such a pain. If there's a tie you need tie-breaking roles, yada yada. The app I use just rolls initiative for everyone automatically.

The turn order is Kelran, Frakus, Gaz, Ghoul 2, Raven, Ghoul 1
[8:54 AM, 2/9/2018]DMSo now you can move up to 35' (if you wish) and do an action (attack, use an item, cast a spell, etc…). Check that document I wrote for you with the super condensed micro-instructions.
[8:58 AM, 2/9/2018]DMNot sure if this link works. Let me know. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AJCgZAJVp-wRe8Nn02Lb_ozCFtsGS2aL7mJen6FVV_k/mobilebasic
[9:00 AM, 2/9/2018]KelranKelran goes in for the attack on ghoul 2 using his longbow.
[9:01 AM, 2/9/2018]DMCool. Make an attack roll.
[9:01 AM, 2/9/2018]Kelran6+7
7+5
[9:04 AM, 2/9/2018]DMThe first is the attack roll and the second is damage? If so, yeah that probably saves time in the long run if you make both rolls at once, but then it's really discouraging when you miss but you happen to have rolled really high damage. Let's just stick to one at a time for now.
[9:05 AM, 2/9/2018]DMYour arrow plunges into Ghoul#2's chest dealing 12 damage. It doubles over in pain.
[9:06 AM, 2/9/2018]DMFrakus
[9:50 AM, 2/9/2018]Kelrank got it
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusFrakus takes a deep breath, draws both axes, and charges at Ghilaine #2.
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]DMah, you've named him. How cute.
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]Frakusghoul*
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]RavenLol. It’s a French ghoul
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]DMroll it
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]RavenSounds like an uptight French cunt ghoul... just saying
[10:31 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusLol. Bosses name actually. Autocorrect.
[10:32 AM, 2/9/2018]DMyou should tell him (her?) what autocorrects to her name
[10:32 AM, 2/9/2018]RavenIt’s apt
[10:32 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusIt is.
[10:39 AM, 2/9/2018]DMroll your attack rolls. One for each axe
[10:39 AM, 2/9/2018]Kelranyou call your boss uptight French cunt ghoul
[10:39 AM, 2/9/2018]Kelran?
[10:40 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusHer name is Ghilaine. Autocorrected from the Gh in ghoul.
[10:40 AM, 2/9/2018]FrakusBut yes, yes I do. She’s pretty hip.
[10:42 AM, 2/9/2018]Frakus16+4
[10:42 AM, 2/9/2018]Frakus12+4
[10:43 AM, 2/9/2018]DMboth hit. Roll damage. Remember, the second axe doesn't get the +2 for the damage.
[10:44 AM, 2/9/2018]Frakus2+2
[10:44 AM, 2/9/2018]Frakus5
[10:46 AM, 2/9/2018]DM9 damage. Not quite a killing blow, but its handing its letter to his wife over to Ghoul#1.
[10:46 AM, 2/9/2018]DMGaz
[11:34 AM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz wheezes. He leans forward on his quarterstaff.
[11:35 AM, 2/9/2018]GazHe shuffles forward and swings the wooden stick at Ghoul #2, who he thinks of as Eloise.
[11:37 AM, 2/9/2018]DMattack roll with disadvantage. (Roll twice, lower roll wins)
[11:42 AM, 2/9/2018]Gaz25 & 23
[11:42 AM, 2/9/2018]GazBOOM!
[11:43 AM, 2/9/2018]DMdamn son. One of those was a natural 20. Too bad that's not the one that counts. :( Still a hit though! A glorious hit! Roll for damage.
[11:47 AM, 2/9/2018]Gaz9 ... slammo!
[12:14 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz' quarterstaff splits the top of Eloise's skull open, splashing rotten brains and gore onto the walls and floor.

Gaz leans forward with his hands on his knees to draw a thin breath of air.

Eloise stands momentarily with the wooden staff stuck in place. She falls forward and sploshes to the ground.
[12:15 PM, 2/9/2018]DM:)
[12:16 PM, 2/9/2018]DMin case anyone was wondering, yes, that happens. I asked Dave if he wanted to describe his own killing blow.
[12:16 PM, 2/9/2018]DMGaz can also use a bonus action to punch/karate chop/5-finger palm-strike the other ghoul if he likes.
[12:16 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenYeah!! My turn?!
[12:17 PM, 2/9/2018]DMnope, still Dave
[12:22 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz lifts a hand from one knee and brings a slow, looping Flintstones-judo-chop-chop style blow down on Ghoul #1.
[12:23 PM, 2/9/2018]DMattack roll with disadvantage
[12:23 PM, 2/9/2018]GazJust a straight d20, I assume
[12:23 PM, 2/9/2018]DMsorry, you don't have that in your sheet. It's a d20 + proficiency + dext modifier.
[12:24 PM, 2/9/2018]DMSo d20 + 5
[12:24 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz14 + 12
[12:24 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz is very tired.
[12:24 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz"Why am I the only one fighting?" he thinks.
[12:25 PM, 2/9/2018]DM14 + 12?
[12:25 PM, 2/9/2018]DMoh
[12:25 PM, 2/9/2018]DM12. got it
[12:25 PM, 2/9/2018]GazExactly
[12:26 PM, 2/9/2018]DMyou strike true. Roll damage. 1d4 +3
[12:28 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz6
[12:30 PM, 2/9/2018]DMYou have that Fury of the Small ability that lets you add 1 more point of damage (per whatever level you're at) on a hit. But you can only do it once until you complete a short or long rest. You want to use it?
[12:51 PM, 2/9/2018]DMcough cough. Jenny's dying to take her turn. Dave!
[2:30 PM, 2/9/2018]GazNo.
I restrain my fury.
[2:31 PM, 2/9/2018]DMRaven HOOOOOOOOO!
[2:36 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenAnxious to finish off the ghoul and find Kit, Raven rounds the corner to get within sight of Ghoul 1.
[2:37 PM, 2/9/2018]DMthis ghoul hates birds and freaks out at the site of it. Blrghablargableckablrgl!
[2:39 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven"Before I blast you with my mighty Warlock power, you sniveling wart, I'd like to give you the opportunity to tell me where my Cat Lady friend is. If you tell me where she is, I'll only shoot you with my bow. If you don't tell me where she is, I'll fire a beam of pure energy at your head, and then I'll let my raven eviscerate your insides. What'll it be?"
[2:39 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven(roll intimidation?) or is that an action?
[2:42 PM, 2/9/2018]DMTalking on your turn is a free action as long as its pretty brief. Something like, "hey lookout!" or "guys I'm on fire, come put me out!". This though would probably be considered an outcome. But I should tell you that given the ghouls behaviour thus far you don't believe them to have any intelligence other than "food, kill, destroy, eat face, sleep".
[2:43 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz lays on his back and stares at the ceiling, deeply regretting his decision to follow these evil lunatics, and wishing it would all end.
[2:43 PM, 2/9/2018]Ravenah. ok...
[2:44 PM, 2/9/2018]DMthey're basically these: https://youtu.be/lb7nkDYuvd0?t=43s
[2:44 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven"Sigh. I'm negotiating with worm. Eldritch blast it is," she says raising her palm at it
[2:44 PM, 2/9/2018]DMroll for a spell attack
[2:45 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven22
[2:45 PM, 2/9/2018]DMroll damage
[2:45 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven10!!!!!!!!!!!!
[2:45 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenFuckin'A!!!!
[2:45 PM, 2/9/2018]DMYou shoot your whole load right in its face.
[2:46 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenDamn right I do, and it feels so good.
[2:46 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenMy raven goes coocoo, it caws and hops and flutters in glee.
[2:46 PM, 2/9/2018]DMit ain't dead, but it's messed up real bad. Do you move too or stay put?
[2:47 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenI step back round the bend for cover.
[2:51 PM, 2/9/2018]DMThe ghoul attacks the closest thing to it. A tiny green morsel of goblin appetizer. It claws at him viciously, slashing his chest dealing 6 damage. Gaz is down to his last hp now! Besides the searing pain of being clawed open only lasts a moment though. It's quickly replaced by an odd numbness that spreads through your body. Dave I need you to make a Constitution Savings Throw. (with disadvantage because you're still poisoned by the toxic gas)
[2:53 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz1
[2:53 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz(Seriously.)
[2:54 PM, 2/9/2018]DMlol. The numbness grows stronger. It permeates every bit of you until you feel your muscles seizing. They no longer respond to your will. You become a sort of living statue as you are now completely paralyzed.
[2:55 PM, 2/9/2018]DMKerlan, back to you. One ghoul remains. He's on his last legs.
[2:55 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven"Take him down, Kelran!!"
[2:56 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven"Hang in there, Gaz! Help is on the way!"
[2:59 PM, 2/9/2018]KelranKelran raises his voice. Gaz you ain't dying under my watch. Kelran flings himself onto the wall, then jumps into the air and launches his bow.
[3:00 PM, 2/9/2018]Kelran13+7
[3:00 PM, 2/9/2018]DMdamn! awesome, roll damage
[3:01 PM, 2/9/2018]Kelranlaunch arrow I meant :)
[3:01 PM, 2/9/2018]Kelran3+5
[3:05 PM, 2/9/2018]KelranThe arrow goes straight through the ghouls eye out the back of it's head. Arrow lodges in the wall behind it. Eye ball dangling off the shaft of bow.
[3:09 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenRaven runs over to Gaz and finds his Healing Potion. She cradles his teeny head gently in one hand and pours the liquid into his mouth.
[3:11 PM, 2/9/2018]DMGaz, roll 2d4+2 to see how much you're healed for.
[6:02 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz7
[6:07 PM, 2/9/2018]DMI was about to say, "oh well, you only get healed for 7 hp", but that actually brings you back up to full health. Daaaam. 1st level is weak son!

Gaz is still paralyzed, but you see his wounds close before your eyes. Gaz gradually starts to feel some feeling in his fingertips. He's thawing out.

As the room goes quiet, at first all you're able to hear is your own heartbeats and heavy breathing, but as your nerves settle you hear the faint, muted sounds of an enormous battle raging above you. Every so often there's the distant sound of an explosion followed shortly by dust and debris falling from the ceiling. Hopefully not too many Harpers are dying in the battle above you.
[6:08 PM, 2/9/2018]DMThe room you're in has a door to the east, west, and north. Around the bend there's another door to the north.
[6:09 PM, 2/9/2018]DMGaz begins to get movement back in his mouth and throat. He can talk and just barely move his limbs ever so slightly.
[6:11 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusFuck! Right. I seem to remember something about not wasting our time...
[6:13 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenNorth doorway?
[6:13 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusLet’s move
[6:13 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenRaven heads to the north passage
[6:14 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusFrak follows
[6:14 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz thinks, "Typical. That they would rummage through my meagre possessions to find a potion to revive me but squirrel their own away."
[6:16 PM, 2/9/2018]DMGaz can now move slowly. Another 30 seconds or so and you should probably be fine.
[6:18 PM, 2/9/2018]DMAlright, you're at the north door. You open it, listen, investigate, what?
[6:18 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenRaven listens at the door
[6:20 PM, 2/9/2018]DMroll for perception
[6:21 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenAnd she rolls a 0.... and actual zero.
[6:22 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusListen longer and harder.
[6:23 PM, 2/9/2018]DMShe hears a train go by. Trains don't exist in this world, but she hears one. She pulls her head away from the door and bangs her ear a couple times. The sound of the train fades.
[6:23 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusWhile Raven is listening, Frakus is checking out the door.
[6:23 PM, 2/9/2018]DMroll it
[6:24 PM, 2/9/2018]Frakus20+1
[6:24 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusBoye!
[6:25 PM, 2/9/2018]DMYou hear.......nothing.
[6:26 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz rises to his little goblin feet and pass forward to the others
[6:27 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz... pads forward ...
[6:30 PM, 2/9/2018]DMYuh huh
[6:33 PM, 2/9/2018]GazWhile they gaze at the north door, Gaz takes hold of the knob / latch to the west door and pulls it open a crack to peek inside
[6:36 PM, 2/9/2018]DMYou see stone stairs curl up in a spiral. The battle sounds you heard a moment ago intensify. From the cries of battle, the ring of steel, and the scent of fire and blood, you know the battle upstairs rages as the Harpers take on the minions of Zaldara.
[6:42 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz carefully, so so quietly, closes that door.
[6:42 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven“I hear a battle”, whispers raven. I think that’s the wrong direction.
[6:42 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenRaven gently tries the north door to see if it’s locked.
[6:42 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz"Stairway to certain death over here."
[6:42 PM, 2/9/2018]DMIt's not.
[6:42 PM, 2/9/2018]DMLocked I mean.
[6:43 PM, 2/9/2018]DMCertain death? Prolly.
[6:43 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenRaven gently opens it and takes a peek through the crack.
[6:44 PM, 2/9/2018]DMMake a stealth check
[6:45 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven18
[6:47 PM, 2/9/2018]DMYou see a small staircase leading down. A landing is visible halfway down. Arms and armor are mounted on the walls. All are rusted and ruined, save for a round shield, painted red with two battered longswords hanging behind it.
[6:53 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven“This looks very secret lair-ish,” Raven whispers. She steps down the stairs.
[6:57 PM, 2/9/2018]DMAs Raven heads down the stairs, what are the rest of you doing?
[7:10 PM, 2/9/2018]DMHaving fun Sam?
[7:27 PM, 2/9/2018]Frakus💔
[7:28 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven“Does anyone wanna abandon this stairwell and run back to the crystal cave and touch them and poof to Kit? Maybe she’s with the Skin Book”, Raven says from the top of the stairs.
[8:30 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz reaches up and pulls the red shield off the wall
[8:33 PM, 2/9/2018]DM"This is no regular shield", you think to yourself. You feel magic coursing through it. As you pull the shield from the wall though, the two rusty swords mounted behind it spring to life. They jump off the wall and aim their pointy bits at your face. Rolling initiative...
[8:37 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz puts it back.
Gaz puts it back!!
[8:39 PM, 2/9/2018]DMyou put back the shield. The swords briefly "look" at it, and then a moment back at you. It's hard to discern emotion from a sword, but it seems pissed.
[8:41 PM, 2/9/2018]Frakus“Hey, what’s going on in there?”
[8:41 PM, 2/9/2018]DMThe turn order is Raven, Sword 1, Frakus, Sword 2, Gaz, Kelran
[8:49 PM, 2/9/2018]Raven“Holy Deva! Angry swords!!” Raven blasts sword one with Eldritch Blast!
[8:50 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenAttack 21, damage 4 🤦‍♀
[8:51 PM, 2/9/2018]RavenShe runs back down the stairs and into the Tbone room
[8:59 PM, 2/9/2018]DMSparks shower over Gaz as the magical blast collides with the metal blade of the sword.
[9:05 PM, 2/9/2018]DMSword 1 turns its attention to Raven and flies out the room chasing her at great speed. It slices her in the back dealing 7 damage. The sword in turn takes 5 cold damage as it hits her magical armour. Before it flies out of the room though Gaz gets an opportunity attack on it if he wishes.
[9:23 PM, 2/9/2018]GazGaz swings his staff at the sword swooping past
[9:24 PM, 2/9/2018]DMRoll it
[9:24 PM, 2/9/2018]Gaz11 + 5: 16
[9:25 PM, 2/9/2018]DMIt flies out of your reach just a moment before your staff swings down.
[9:26 PM, 2/9/2018]DMFrakus...
[9:51 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusBriefly startled by the floating sword, Frakus instinctively swings one of his axes where he expects the wielder to be and the other at the sword itself.
[9:52 PM, 2/9/2018]DMRoll it. Also is your main hand going for the sword or what you think is an invisible wielder?
[9:57 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusSadly yes.
[9:57 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusJust one roll I presume?
[9:58 PM, 2/9/2018]Frakus13+4
[10:00 PM, 2/9/2018]DMNo, roll both. You're attaching with both axes right? One at the sword itself and one slightly behind the sword no? Or did I misunderstand?
[10:01 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusYes both axes. Ryan wasn’t expecting to actually hit anything.
[10:01 PM, 2/9/2018]Frakus11+4
[10:02 PM, 2/9/2018]DMWhich roll is which?
[10:02 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusPrimary, secondary
[10:02 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusSorry reverse
[10:03 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusFirst roll was for the sword, but with the weak hand.
[10:04 PM, 2/9/2018]DMWith your main hand you hit the sword. Your other axe cuts air. Roll damage for the first.
[10:05 PM, 2/9/2018]Frakus6+2
[10:05 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusNo, just six
[10:06 PM, 2/9/2018]DMThe blade cracks and splinters but is still aloft. Do you move?
[10:07 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusFrakus tries to jump out of the way of the shards.
[10:08 PM, 2/9/2018]DMI didn't mean you were in any danger. It just breaks a bit. I was just wondering if you wanted to move anywhere or just stay put.
[10:09 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusHe moves north into the adjacent chamber.
[10:09 PM, 2/9/2018]DMOk. Just FYI, the sword will get an opportunity attack on you.
[10:10 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusOh!
[10:10 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusI thought he had destroyed it.
[10:10 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusHe stays put in that case.
[10:11 PM, 2/9/2018]FrakusWas imagining floating pieces, but disabled...
[10:11 PM, 2/9/2018]DMNope. Just slightly broken.
[10:13 PM, 2/9/2018]DMSword 2 swings at Gaz. It cuts a deep swath down the length of his arm severing multiple arteries dealing 7 damage. In one strike Gaz is back down to 1 hp.
[10:13 PM, 2/9/2018]DMGaz's turn
[8:25 AM, 2/10/2018]DM(Just want to remind Gaz of his disengage bonus ability. You know, just in case he wants to bone out)
[9:14 AM, 2/10/2018]GazGaz reverses his earlier decision and, in a desperate attempt to turn the tables, snatches the magic shield off the wall.

He slides his arm into the leather straps and hopes something good happens.
[9:23 AM, 2/10/2018]DMYou feel the magical energy of the shield but are yet unaware of what it does. Also, as a monk, the shield feels bulky and unfamiliar to you. (There's game mechanics to that. You're not proficient with shields plus as a monk your abilities only work as long as you're unarmoured and not wearing a shield. So no bonus punch attack, and your weapons will use Strength instead of Dexterity. Also any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll is done with disadvantage.) What now? You can still move and you can still use your disengage ability, but you can't attack as donning the shield is an action. Mulligan?
[10:25 AM, 2/10/2018]GazGaz holds the shield up for protection and dashes out of the room
[12:22 PM, 2/10/2018]DMThat happens. The sword swings at Gaz but he ducks, dodges, and dives out of the way. Gaz is now back in that room with the rest of you.
[12:23 PM, 2/10/2018]DMKelran…
[1:42 PM, 2/10/2018]KelranKelran tries a stealth move of inching along the wall to get behind sword 1 and tries to grab the handle
[1:43 PM, 2/10/2018]DMYeah, it's kind of hard to be stealthy when the enemy is literally right in front of you. Are you doing one of those, "hey! What's that behind you?!" kind of deals?
[1:44 PM, 2/10/2018]DMYou can try and grab it however, just not stealthily.
[1:46 PM, 2/10/2018]KelranWith gaz entering the room. The sword turns in his direction. Kelran goes to grab it.
[1:49 PM, 2/10/2018]DMLol. Ok. (In the future though you can't really say what other things are doing. Just you.) but yeah, the sword swings around. Make a Dexterity check.
[1:50 PM, 2/10/2018]KelranK. 7+5
[1:52 PM, 2/10/2018]DMOh man, you get your hand around the handle. It feels like you've got a good grip but it jerks and flies out of your grasp.
[1:54 PM, 2/10/2018]DMDo you move anywhere? If you do it'll get an opportunity attack on you.
[2:03 PM, 2/10/2018]KelranI stay put
[2:05 PM, 2/10/2018]DMRaven, you're up
[3:01 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenRaven shrugs off the bird and winds up her quarterstaff all in one smooth motion. She slams it on the sword bits.
[3:02 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven19
[3:02 PM, 2/10/2018]DMRoll damage
[3:02 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven10 damage!
[3:03 PM, 2/10/2018]DMIt shatters! The bits fall to the ground. Motionless.

Frakus…
[3:22 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“Goblin, what were you running from?”
[4:19 PM, 2/10/2018]GazThe flying swords!
Weren't there flying swords out here?!
[4:25 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“Another one?” Frakus dashes to the door to close it, hopefully locking the other sword inside.
[4:35 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenFor the DM: you close the door.
[4:35 PM, 2/10/2018]Gaz"One of you should take this."

Gaz drops the shield on the floor.

"I think it's magic."
[4:36 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenA moment later, the sword noisily clanks into the door.
[4:37 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenGaz, you’re up unless we decide to just head a different way.
[4:39 PM, 2/10/2018]Gaz"Battle raging through the west door. Flying sword through the north door. East door it is!"

Gaz tries to open the east door and peek inside.
[4:41 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenWe will arrive at our destination in 30 minutes. More soon...
[5:01 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“Besides the charmed swords, what else was in that room? Did it lead anywhere?”
[5:05 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“All we saw were stairs going down with a landing halfway”
[5:05 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“And now there’s a maniacal sword floating by the door too”
[5:06 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“We need to go up don’t we? And we need to find Kit!”
[5:07 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“Why do we have to go up? The battle is up there. We need to find the Skin Book down here in the cellar”
[5:08 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“Right. Ok. The call of battle...”
[5:12 PM, 2/10/2018]DMIs anyone picking up the magic shield?
[5:20 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenRaven picks up the magic shield
[5:22 PM, 2/10/2018]DMAre you wearing it? I forget if you have proficiency in shields (it would be on the last page of your sheet).
[5:27 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenShe straps it on her back until someone else asks for it.
[5:27 PM, 2/10/2018]DMk
[5:27 PM, 2/10/2018]DMGaz peeks in through the door to the east
[5:29 PM, 2/10/2018]DMHe sees a room about 15x25'. The air in this chamber is alive, dancing with some unseen energy. Two thick pillars extending floor to ceiling hum. Between them sits an iron chest.
[5:31 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“What do you see Gaz”, whispers raven, trying to peer over his shoulder into the room
[5:58 PM, 2/10/2018]Gaz"Big room with two pillars and a chest in the middle. Some weird energy."
[6:06 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“Ok. Good. Weird energy is good.”
[6:06 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“Let’s creep in. Real slow like.”
[6:09 PM, 2/10/2018]DMDoes that happen?
[6:10 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“You’re hurt pretty bad, Gaz. I’ll go in first.”
[6:10 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenRaven enters the room. Suuuuuuper slowly and carefully.
[6:12 PM, 2/10/2018]DMStealth roll. Make it!
[6:13 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven15
[6:13 PM, 2/10/2018]DMYou enter the room. You see what Gaz described.
[6:14 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenI looks around looking to see if anything f stand out.
[6:14 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenOh my. Me drinking.
[6:15 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenPerception 16
[6:16 PM, 2/10/2018]DMOn each pillar you notice a small button embedded in the stone.
[6:17 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenButtons. Hmmm. “Gaz. I’ll press the left one, you press the right. At the same time. On 3?
[6:19 PM, 2/10/2018]DMYou say this and hear an awful, unnatural wail. A specter or ghost of some kind comes out from behind one of the pillars.
[6:20 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenDammit.
[6:20 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenOh. Bugger.
[6:22 PM, 2/10/2018]DMTurn order is Raven, Gaz, Specter,Frakus, Kelran
[6:23 PM, 2/10/2018]DMFrakus and Kelran definitely hear the scream. They haven't seen the ghost but they know something shitty is in that room.
[6:24 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“Aaaaaaah!!”
[6:24 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenRaven blasts some Eldritch at it
[6:24 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“Battle!”
[6:25 PM, 2/10/2018]FrakusFrakus follows the sound.
[6:25 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven22
[6:25 PM, 2/10/2018]DMRoll damage
[6:25 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven8
[6:30 PM, 2/10/2018]DMThe specter takes 8 damage. It wails an ears-piercing shriek. Your ears hurt. It gives you a stink eye something fierce.
[6:30 PM, 2/10/2018]DMGaz…
[6:32 PM, 2/10/2018]GazGaz yells, "Spectre! Wait. Talk to us. We are on a sacred mission."
[6:39 PM, 2/10/2018]GazGaz lays his quarterstaff on the stone floor and holds his empty hands in the air.
[6:57 PM, 2/10/2018]DM"Eat your soul I will!"
[6:59 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenRaven backs up through the door! Fast!
[7:02 PM, 2/10/2018]Gaz"We are here to set souls free, spectre. Maybe we can set yours free too."
[7:03 PM, 2/10/2018]DMRoll persuasion.
[7:18 PM, 2/10/2018]Gaz16
[7:41 PM, 2/10/2018]DM"Counter proposal. I set your soul free of its awful green shell. Then you suck on these 🥜!"

It passes right through the pillar, grasps Gaz's face, leans in close as if to kiss him and sucks the life force right out of his body. 8 damage. Before you drop to zero hp I need you to make a Constitution savings throw.
[7:45 PM, 2/10/2018]GazDoes it matter that I was at 1 HP after my misadventure with the sword?
[7:47 PM, 2/10/2018]DMIt does. But not in terms of the constitution savings throw. What matters is that if you were to take damage that brings you to zero, and the leftover damage was greater than or equal to your hp max, that's instant death. No death savings throw, no passing go, no $200. You came close.
[7:47 PM, 2/10/2018]DMThe savings throw is for something else related to something the specter does to you when it ducks out your life.
[7:56 PM, 2/10/2018]Gaz8
[7:58 PM, 2/10/2018]DMK. You're knocked out and will start death savings throws on your next turn.

Frakus you're up.
[8:36 PM, 2/10/2018]GazGaz drifts into a peaceful state of goblin meditation and bliss.

"At least I died a hero."
[10:31 PM, 2/10/2018]FrakusFrakus looks down at the fallen goblin...
[10:37 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakusand thinks to himself, “if anyone is going to kill you, it’s going to be me”.
[10:39 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenRaven sees Frakus dilly dallying as the spectre looms and shouts, “Frakus! Rage! There’s a ghost trying to kill us!”
[10:42 PM, 2/10/2018]FrakusHe grabs a loose piece of fabric on the dying goblin’s silly head covering and tries to pull him out of the room.
[10:43 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“I don’t think rage will help us this time.”
[10:46 PM, 2/10/2018]RavenFrom DM: Fine. Frakus pulls Gaz out of the room. Kelran.
[10:47 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“C’mon Kelran! Fuck this thing up”, Raven pleads.
[10:48 PM, 2/10/2018]Frakus“Something tells me we need more than wood and iron to defeat this thing.”
[10:49 PM, 2/10/2018]Raven“Well, we at least need to try!”
[11:14 PM, 2/10/2018]DMKelran, you're up.
[12:41 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranKelran agrees that my weapons won't have any affect. Raven you are out of room or just at door?
[12:41 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranKelran wants to go for the button at first column
[12:41 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusOr maybe try a ranged attack?
[12:42 PM, 2/11/2018]DMThere's a soul-sucking ghost hot on your heels. Very little time for talking. Action!
[12:43 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenTry a ranged attack. Let’s see if we can hit it. My spell hurt it. Let’s see what weapons will do
[12:43 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranKelran tries to shoot arrow at button
[12:44 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranK. Kelran goes for attack on entity
[12:45 PM, 2/11/2018]DMRoll it
[12:44 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranWith arrow
[12:45 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranOuch. 20+7
[12:46 PM, 2/11/2018]DMA critical hit! Roll for damage. So instead of 1d8+5 it's 1d8+8+5
[12:47 PM, 2/11/2018]Kelran7+8+5
[12:50 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusNice!
[12:51 PM, 2/11/2018]DMYour arrow sails through it dragging a contrail of its ghostly essence behind it. A hole forms in the ghost and it's clearly in pain, but not quite as much as the full 20 points of damage you would expect. (Almost like it's resistant to piercing damage. wink wink). It shrieks a blood curdling wail, balls up its fists and face in concentration and you see the hole partially knit itself back together, but not fully.
[12:51 PM, 2/11/2018]DMRaven, you're up
[12:53 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenEldritch Blast!! “Suck it, Casper!”
[12:53 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven16
[12:54 PM, 2/11/2018]DMBasic rules sidebar: some enemies or even you guys can be either Resistant or Immune to certain types of damage. Immune means something doesn't hurt it at all. Resistant means it takes half damage. Raven for instance has resistant to radiant and necrotic damage. Something can also have a weakness to certain types of damage meaning it takes double-damage.
[12:56 PM, 2/11/2018]DMA sniper shot of crackling energy hits it square in the chest. Roll for damage.
[12:56 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven9
[1:01 PM, 2/11/2018]DMThe spectre brings its arms and legs tight into its chest then explodes them outwards screaming in pain as it dissipates into thin wisps of smoke. You hear its screams continue for a moment and then slowly fade out to silence.
[1:02 PM, 2/11/2018]DMYou're out of turn-based time. Do as you wish.
[1:03 PM, 2/11/2018]DMOh wait!
[1:03 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Let’s go find Kit!”
[1:03 PM, 2/11/2018]DMNot quite out of turn-based time.
[1:04 PM, 2/11/2018]DMGaz is dying. You can either try and stabilize him with a successful Medicine check, or you can try and heal either with a potion or some other ability if you have one, or just let fate decide his path and he can start making death savings throws (not recommended).
[1:05 PM, 2/11/2018]DMIt's Gaz's turn next anyways though, so go ahead and roll a d20
[1:05 PM, 2/11/2018]DMDo you guys remember how death-savings throws work?
[1:06 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusWe throw stuff at him until he wakes up?
[1:08 PM, 2/11/2018]DMNot exactly Florence Nightingale over here.
[1:08 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusI’m out of potion. Going offline for a bit. If you guys decide to go find Kit, I’m all in.
[1:09 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven can heal him back to one Point on her turn
[1:09 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenUh hello!!! Buttons! Chest!! We’re right here!!
[1:09 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFine, but right after that.
[1:11 PM, 2/11/2018]DMFor Phil's sake (and a refresher to the rest of you) when you get reduced to zero hit points, it doesn't necessarily mean you're dead, but you're certainly walking towards the light. You're unconscious and unless you somehow get healed through one form or another you start making death-savings throws. Once per turn you roll a d20. There's no modifiers for this. Just fate. A roll of 10 or higher is a success. A roll of 9 or lower is a failure. You keep track of how many successes and failures you get. The first to 3 is the final outcome. If you reach 3 successes first, you're still at zero hp and unconscious, but you're stable. After about an hour or so you naturally heal yourself for 1hp. If you reach 3 failures first though, that's it...you go to the great beyond.
[1:12 PM, 2/11/2018]DMA roll of 1 counts as two failures. A roll of 20 and you instantly get healed for 1hp and are back in action.
[1:18 PM, 2/11/2018]Gaz15
[1:20 PM, 2/11/2018]DMThat's one success. Frakus, you're up... You can use a potion on him, or make a successful Medicine check to try and stabilize him.
[3:12 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFrakus can’t recall ever healing a goblin before. At the moment, he thinks he’s of better use alive than dead.
[3:12 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusMedicine check: 11-1 (10) 🙁🙂
[3:15 PM, 2/11/2018]DMYou put in the absolute minimum amount of effort to stabilize his vitals. You really phone it in, but alas he looks like he's gonna pull through. You're now officially out of turn-based time and can do what you want.
[3:16 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFrakus is somewhat pleased.
[3:17 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven says, "I'm dying to see what;s in the chest"
[3:17 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenShe goes over to it and looks to see if there's anything special or unusual about it
[3:24 PM, 2/11/2018]DMAs you enter the room you feel an energetic buzzing sensation. You've never felt anything quite like it. The hair on your arms stand on end.

You inspect the chest. It's ornately decorated and quite old, but looks like it's well maintained. There's no dust on it.
[3:28 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Ok, here's goes nothing," she whispers to herself. She attempts to open the chest.
[3:28 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenWait. She pulls her hands back.
[3:29 PM, 2/11/2018]DMLol. Ok?
[3:29 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"The buttons on the pillars," she says turning back to her friends.
[3:29 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Those don't seem accidental," she worries about unleashing something else
[3:29 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Yes?”
[3:30 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Frakus, you press the one on the left. Kelran, the one on the right? On three?"
[3:31 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“On three or on go?”
[3:33 PM, 2/11/2018]DMKelran are you doing this or do you have other thoughts?
[3:44 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"I'm open to suggestions though. You think we should just try and open the chest? And ignore the buttons?"
[3:46 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Enough talking.” Frakus presses his button.
[3:47 PM, 2/11/2018]Ravenno wait!!!
[3:47 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenWait for Kelran, Frakus
[3:47 PM, 2/11/2018]DMDoes she stop you in time?
[3:47 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenYES!
[3:47 PM, 2/11/2018]DMFrakus?
[3:48 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFrakus stops at the very last second. “What?!”
[3:49 PM, 2/11/2018]Ravensigh
[3:49 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenC'mon Kelran!
[3:50 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“What makes you think doing them all at the same time is the right thing to do? Seems like a pretty big leap of faith.”
[3:53 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Why else would there be two?"
[3:54 PM, 2/11/2018]DMGaz might have an opinion but he's still knocked out.
[3:54 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"I could be completely wrong... but I also could be right!"
[3:54 PM, 2/11/2018]Ravenoh Ya!
[3:54 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenThought he was healed by Ryan. While we wait for Kelran to come back, Raven goes over to Gaz and casts Healing Hands.
[3:55 PM, 2/11/2018]DMNope. Just stabilized. Still at zero and unconscious.
[3:55 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenHow come?
[3:56 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenI just touch a creature and it regains 1 HP
[3:56 PM, 2/11/2018]DMNo. I mean, I was answering the first part of your "thought he was…"
[3:59 PM, 2/11/2018]DMHe's actually supposed to gain 4 (your level + your charisma modifier). You lay your hands upon him. A warm glow spreads through. His eyes flutter open. Unfortunately, he's only healed for 1hp instead of 4. Whatever that specter did to him it reduced his max HP down to just 1. You have no idea how long that will last but in the meantime, no one sneeze on Gaz.
[4:04 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"welcome back little buddy!"
[4:04 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Can you reach that button over there? We're thinking of pressing those two buttons at the same time, on the count of three..."
[4:04 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"We'll count one, two, then press the button on three"
[4:11 PM, 2/11/2018]GazGaz lifts his hand to press on cue.
[4:11 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenFrakus? Ready?
[4:12 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Steady now, we can't afford to mess Gaz up any more!"
[4:12 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Ready. On three.”
[4:14 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven kneels by the chest, ready to open on three. "One. Two." She looks at each one quickly and says, "three".
[4:16 PM, 2/11/2018]GazPress.
[4:16 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusPress.
[4:17 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven puts her hands on the chest to open it
[4:17 PM, 2/11/2018]DMGaz and Frakus are right on cue with each other. Like an adorable 60s sitcom about a pair of unlikely friends. As they push the button you hear a descending whir sound as if something is powering down. The hair on your arms no longer stands on end. You no longer feel a weird energy in the air.
[4:17 PM, 2/11/2018]DMThe chest is locked.
[4:18 PM, 2/11/2018]DMSidebar:
[4:19 PM, 2/11/2018]DMJust because something is locked doesn't mean you can't try and force it open. Hey! Maybe there's something in your inventory that might help? Barring that, literally everything has hit points. Given enough time you could feasibly knock down a wall if you needed to.
[4:20 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven grabs her hammer and crowbar and gets to work on that chest!
[4:21 PM, 2/11/2018]DMMake a strength check. (With advantage because of the crowbar)
[4:23 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven16 and 17
[4:24 PM, 2/11/2018]DMIt almost feels like it budges, but the crowbar loses its purchase and snaps out of its lodging. The wood splinters, but the chest remains sealed.
[4:25 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Freakus? Take a shot big guy!"
[4:45 PM, 2/11/2018]GazGaz slaps flaccidly at the lid.
[4:46 PM, 2/11/2018]DMIt is humorous but proves to be ineffective.
[4:48 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Step aside”
[4:49 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFrakus jumps on top of the chest.
[4:49 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusI mean, slams it with his great axe.
[4:49 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusSorry, thought for a second we were trying to close it.
[5:21 PM, 2/11/2018]DMRoll for damage.
[5:22 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus10+2
[5:23 PM, 2/11/2018]DMThat happens. You take a chunk out of it. It remains closed.
[5:26 PM, 2/11/2018]DMYou guys want to just "take a 20"?
[5:30 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusYessir
[5:31 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFrakus swings away
[5:33 PM, 2/11/2018]DMAfter a few more thwacks the chest collapses. Its contents spill out in a mess of splinters and chipped wood.
[5:36 PM, 2/11/2018]DMInside you find a a pouch containing 200gp, three scrolls in wooden tubes, and a spellbook bound in skin.
[5:52 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenIs the spellbook written in blood??? Is it THE skin book?????
[5:52 PM, 2/11/2018]DMIt matches the description you were given.
[5:52 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven"Holy Deva!"
[5:53 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenOk... "I'm not sure that I wanna touch that thing," Amber muses
[5:53 PM, 2/11/2018]DMWho's Amber?
[5:54 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenLOL
[5:55 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven*Raven
[6:03 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusHa!
[6:09 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenAlright. Raven puts her leather gloves on and grabs the book. She stashes it in her pack.
[6:10 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranKelran grabs the scrolls and puts in his bag
[6:11 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven grabs the gold.
[6:16 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusFrakus thinks to himself “if she thinks we aren’t splitting up the booty at the end of this, she’s got another thing coming.”
[6:17 PM, 2/11/2018]DMAll that happens. You still hear the battle raging above you, but as Raven grabs the book you can hear a soul-shattering shriek that shakes your faith in any benevolent deity. No good god would ever allow something to exist that could possibly make that sound.
[6:20 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven shivers at the sound. She takes the book back out of her bag and sets it down. She holds a dagger above the book and threatens, "Look here Skin Book, I've got a pointy knife, some Eldritch Blast and not a lot of time. Tell me where my tabaxi friend is. She touched a pink crystal from the cavern and then disappeared. You have 3 seconds."
[6:21 PM, 2/11/2018]DMRoll intimidation
[6:21 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven25. True 20.
[6:22 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusDamn!
[6:23 PM, 2/11/2018]DMThe book is as intimidated as a book has ever been…which is none. None intimidated. You realize you're yelling at an inanimate object and look kind of crazy.
[6:24 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven waits....
[6:24 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenAnd then sighs.
[6:24 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenShe throws it into her backpack again. "Hey Kelran. What do the scolls say? Any maps?"
[6:25 PM, 2/11/2018]DMSomewhere far away an omniscient deity in grey sweatpants chuckles.
[6:25 PM, 2/11/2018]Ravenjerk cough
[6:25 PM, 2/11/2018]FrakusThat was funny
[8:02 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranIt's three 1st level spell scrolls. They're titled "Healing Word", "Inflict Wounds", and "Identify".
[8:16 PM, 2/11/2018]DMSidebar: so a note on spell scrolls. The default rules are overly restrictive on who can use them. And even for those who can use them it's still a challenge. I'm gonna change that a bit.

So our rules are: the way spell scrolls work is that literally anyone can read from a scroll and cast that spell. But it's an expendable item. Upon reading the scroll the words vanish and the scroll crumbles to dust. Also, it's way easier for some people to cast spells than others since it's not just a matter of reading aloud. Often there's complex hand gestures and dancing around and shit. If your character is able to cast spells of any kind, you can cast this spell even if it's not on your class's spell list and even if it's for a level higher than your own.

For anyone who doesn't have spell-casting ability, they can still try and cast it, but they would need to make an Arcana skill check. The DC is 10 + whatever level the spell is.
[8:19 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranKelran should give them to raven then
[8:34 PM, 2/11/2018]DMConveniently, the scrolls have short descriptions of what they do. How thoughtful.

(You don't need any of the material components to cast a spell scroll)
[9:09 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenRaven graciously accepts the scrolls from Kelran. “Cool. Thanks”
[9:12 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“Ok. I vote back to the cave. Touch a crystal. Poof to Kit. Get her out of wherever she is. Back to the boat. The faster the better. People are dying up there.”
[9:12 PM, 2/11/2018]KelranI agree
[9:12 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Wait!”
[9:12 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“Any other suggestions? Gaz is on his last legs. I’m worried that if we open any more doors, he might be a goner.”
[9:12 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“The buttons!”
[9:13 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“What about the buttons?”
[9:13 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“We turned something off. Do we leave it off?”
[9:13 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“Yes. Totally”
[9:13 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“We dodged a magical hair raising bullet there.”
[9:14 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“It might have something to do with Kit’s disappearance.”
[9:14 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“Mmmmm. I don’t think so. I think it was to disarm the chest”.
[9:16 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Ok, perhaps. Let’s go back to the crystal room.”
[9:16 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“To the crystal room! Let’s retrace our steps as much as possible so that we avoid new beasties”.
[9:17 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenGaz. You comin’?
[9:17 PM, 2/11/2018]Frakus“Indeed. I suggest we all grab a crystal simultaneously.”
[9:18 PM, 2/11/2018]Raven“Right”
[9:18 PM, 2/11/2018]RavenLet’s book. No pun intended.
[9:19 PM, 2/11/2018]DMI'll just wait to hear back on what Gaz and Kelran are thinking.
[9:19 PM, 2/11/2018]DMOh, Kelran agrees. Gaz, ideas?
[10:27 PM, 2/11/2018]GazGaz starts shuffling back to where this whole sordid and regrettable episode began.
[10:29 PM, 2/11/2018]DMalright, you all head back to the glittery crystal cavern
[8:15 AM, 2/12/2018]DMYou're there.
[8:38 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus looks for four adjacent crystals.
[8:52 AM, 2/12/2018]DMthere's tons all over the place. The walls and roof are littered with them.
[8:55 AM, 2/12/2018]KelranKelran goes to one of the crystals but ain't touching it. Will wait till everyone is ready and we pull at the same time.
[8:56 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus“Everyone choose a crystal and put your hand out.”
[9:10 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven“I’m ready when you are”, Raven says, trying not to sound totally freaked out at the thought of poofing into the unknown.
[9:10 AM, 2/12/2018]DMare you all grabbing crystals at the same time, or one at a time? If the latter, who's first?
[9:11 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenSame time’s fine with me.
[9:11 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusSame
[9:11 AM, 2/12/2018]Kelrandon't want anyone to chicken out
[9:12 AM, 2/12/2018]DMif anyone wants to do one of those things where they're pretending they're in but at the last second pull their hand away, PM me.
[9:16 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusHmmm
[9:17 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"how about we all tie our hands together just to make sure..."
[9:17 AM, 2/12/2018]Ravendon't be silly. Whoever goes goes. Splitting up us ludicrous anyways. I trust you.
[9:18 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"it's the goblin I worry about, but given how weak he is, I don't think it would be in his best interest to be left behind..."
[9:19 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"and don't call me silly!"
[9:19 AM, 2/12/2018]DMjust waiting to hear back from Dave. He's been quiet.
[9:20 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenIf he wants to hunker down and wait for us, that may not be a bad idea. He has 1 HP left. He may not even survive the poof. He stays behind, I'll understand...
[9:21 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusSquinty nod. "Ok"
[9:23 AM, 2/12/2018]Kelranok
[9:34 AM, 2/12/2018]GazGaz feels good. His 1 HP stands tall like a beacon for other HPs to rally around.
[9:35 AM, 2/12/2018]GazGaz is ready to jewel it up
[9:35 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"On three, then!! One, two, three!!"
[9:36 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus“Three!”
[9:36 AM, 2/12/2018]DMalright, you all grab a jewel and give a good yank. They break off in your hands and you feel a tugging from the pit of your belly. The world spins around you in a blur.
[9:45 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyour ears pop and the wind gets sucked from your lungs. You feel yourself being pulled straight through bedrock. A moment later and "pop!". A rush of air surrounds you as you rematerialize in a very confining 10x5' cell. There's a single door made of iron bars. Outside the cell you see a narrow hallway with some other cells. The floor of the one you're in is littered in many humanoid bones picked clean as well as several of the same kinds of crystals you now hold, only...like yours, they no longer glow and are just inert and useless. Clearly you're not the first adventurers to fall prey to the lure of shiny glittery pretty things. The cell is filled with an acrid smoke. Many of the scraps of clothing from previous victims are now just smoldering embers. There's a broken oil flask nearby. Also, a dead tabaxi lies on the floor. She's covered in dozens of small, angry looking bites.
[9:46 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"No!!"
[9:46 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenRaven tried Healing Hands
[9:46 AM, 2/12/2018]Raventries
[9:47 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusAre we sure it's actually Kit?
[9:47 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenHa. Good point.
[9:47 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenIs it Kit?
[9:48 AM, 2/12/2018]DMNothing happens. No healing glow emanates from your hands. (You can only do it once until you complete a long rest).
[9:48 AM, 2/12/2018]DMYes, it's Kit.
[9:48 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenCuz if it is, I try healing hands
[9:48 AM, 2/12/2018]DMAs you kneel there before Kit, you hear a rustling sound.
[9:48 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenRaven pours her healing potion into Kits mouth
[9:49 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHundreds of spiders come out of the cracks in the walls and form into a swarm.
[9:49 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Blech. I hate spiders"....
[9:49 AM, 2/12/2018]DMrolling initiative...
[9:49 AM, 2/12/2018]Ravenoh yuck
[9:51 AM, 2/12/2018]DMRaven, Spiders, Gaz, Kit (although she's currently dead), Frakus, Kelran
[9:51 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenBlast the swarm!!! Eldritch blast!!! Blast them all!!!!
[9:51 AM, 2/12/2018]DMroll it
[9:52 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven20
[9:52 AM, 2/12/2018]DMroll damage
[9:52 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven7
[9:53 AM, 2/12/2018]DMThe entire swarm vaporizes in a shower of blue and purple sparks. I think maybe that swarm was already weakened
[9:53 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenHA!!! I get 5 HP back or something
[9:53 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven?
[9:54 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenOk.... healing potion.
[9:54 AM, 2/12/2018]DMNo, you already have 4 temp hp from the specter. Temp HP doesn't stack.
[9:54 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenRaven cradles her head and pours the potion into her cute little cat mouth.
[9:54 AM, 2/12/2018]DM(Jenny/Raven has a special ability where if she deals the killing blow to something she sucks some of the life force out of the enemy and gets some temporary hit points on top of her regular hp)
[9:55 AM, 2/12/2018]DMRemove the healing potion from your inventory. Sam, roll 2d4+2 to see how much you're healed for.
[9:58 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenFrakus, you wanna start bashing our way out of here?
[9:58 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyou're about to heal a rogue no?
[9:58 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenI am.
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenI was suggesting that Frakus get to smashing.
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenWe're in a hurry!
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusGotta wait my turn no?
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]DMwhy bash? She's got fancy little tools that would do the job
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenWell then!!
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusOh spiders all dead?
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]DMoh you're out of turn-based time now. Raven destroyed the swarm in one blast
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakusright
[9:59 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"Stand back!"
[10:00 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenNo wait, Frakus.
[10:00 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Kit's a rogue"
[10:00 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"She an pick her way out"
[10:00 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusWhat sort of lock on the door? Padlock?
[10:03 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyeah
[10:05 AM, 2/12/2018]DMYou're all cramped in cell A. You see two other cells across the hall. Nothing else from this vantage point.
[10:05 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus takes out one of his javelins and inserts the metal tip into the shank.
[10:06 AM, 2/12/2018]DMok, everyone stop doing stuff for a minute. Raven's already poured healing potion into Kit. Let's just wait for Sam to roll
[10:06 AM, 2/12/2018]DMlet's resolve one action at a time
[10:06 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus pauses awkwardly.
[10:32 AM, 2/12/2018]Kit9
[10:33 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyou wake up feeling 9 better. Your companions are all huddled right on top of you.
[10:34 AM, 2/12/2018]Kit“Oh hi guys!”
[10:34 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"Hi"
[10:34 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Hey there Kit," Raven says softly, her eyes shining with happy tears.
[10:34 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Wanna pick a lock and get us outta here?"
[10:35 AM, 2/12/2018]Kit“Sure thing.” Kit gets her thieves kit out and picks the lock.
[10:38 AM, 2/12/2018]DMroll it. You have double proficiency in your thieve's tools so you'd make a Dext check + your proficiency bonus x2. (So 1d20 + 4 +2 + 2)
[10:42 AM, 2/12/2018]Kit15
[10:43 AM, 2/12/2018]DMIt's a difficult angle to work with given the padlock is on the outside of the door, but no lock has been forged that keeps Kit out! It pops open.
[10:43 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"I'm sure the javelin would have worked too..."
[10:43 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"But good job!"
[10:44 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Sweet! Let's roll! I really think we should go right."
[10:44 AM, 2/12/2018]Kit“I’m all for getting the hell out of here.”
[10:44 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus draws his axes.
[10:45 AM, 2/12/2018]Raven"To the right then?"
[10:45 AM, 2/12/2018]Kit“Sounds good to me.”
[10:45 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakus"Alright"
[10:47 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyou exit into the hall. It goes east and west. In front of you to the north are 3 cells (from left to right let's call them B, C, D). At the end of the hall to east is another cell (E) and the hallway branches right to head south. The hallway to the left branches right to head north.
[10:47 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyou hear a banging sound coming from the direction of the one at the end of the hall (E).
[10:48 AM, 2/12/2018]DMsorry. Not E. B
[10:48 AM, 2/12/2018]DMthe one right across from you
[10:48 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenCan we see what the banging sound is?
[10:49 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenI think we should stick with the East branch and head south
[10:50 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenI want to avoid the murderous sword.
[10:53 AM, 2/12/2018]DMYou can't see the source of the sound, but maybe if you peek in. It's an iron bar cell door. No need to open it.
[10:53 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusCan we see if E is locked? Is there a pad lock?
[10:53 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenZ12 eh?
[10:53 AM, 2/12/2018]Ravenwe want to get back to Z1. there's a murderous sword blocking our way in Z10
[10:53 AM, 2/12/2018]DMignore the numbers
[10:54 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyou have no idea what part of the dungeon you're in given the layout you're seeing now. There weren't numbers carved into the floors of each room
[10:54 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakusexactly we have no idea where we are..
[10:55 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenI get it. But I also know where some stuff is. It's hard to knowingly walk into shit. So here are some thoughts. If we go west, we may hit an angry sword. But we know the rest of the way is clear and we can get back. If we go east, it's unknown territory and who knows what we might encounter...
[10:57 AM, 2/12/2018]DMyou don't know where anything is. You're in a completely new part of the dungeon/cellar. You don't even know north from south. For all you know I've flipped this map upside down and rotated the text. Don't meta.
[10:57 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenFine, sorry. I say East still.
[10:58 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenAnyone wanna peek at cell B?
[10:58 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus approaches the source of the sound.
[10:59 AM, 2/12/2018]DMAs he approaches the door, it swings open, and ten severed crawling hands crawl out.
[11:00 AM, 2/12/2018]DMrolling initiative...
[11:00 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenCrap
[11:00 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrak!
[11:00 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenAre they a swarm or are there 10 turns for them?
[11:01 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakusswallow your soul!
[11:01 AM, 2/12/2018]DMI'm not bothering with a map here. There's too many of them and you're in such tight quarters that distance doesn't matter. Ranged attacks would be at disadvantage though because they're all over the place. Crawling up the walls, dropping on you from the ceiling, pulling at your pant legs, etc...
[11:01 AM, 2/12/2018]DMno, not a swarm. 10 separate turns.
[11:02 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenJesus!!!
[11:02 AM, 2/12/2018]RavenCan we just outrun them?? they
[11:02 AM, 2/12/2018]Ravenre hands!!
[11:02 AM, 2/12/2018]Frakuskill it with fire!!!!!
[11:02 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand2, Kelran, Hand8, Hand6, Hand3, Hand10, Hand7, Hand4, Hand5, Hand1, Kit, Frakus, Raven, Hand9, Gaz
[11:02 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusLOL!!!!!
[11:03 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand2 leaps up in the air trying to choke Frakus. It misses and sails past him.
[11:03 AM, 2/12/2018]DMKelran, you're up...
[11:07 AM, 2/12/2018]KelranKelran tries getting two hands at once with his swords. Left attacking 8 & and right attacking 6
[11:08 AM, 2/12/2018]DMwhat's your main hand? Left or right handed?
[11:08 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusClever
[11:08 AM, 2/12/2018]Kelranright main hand
[11:09 AM, 2/12/2018]DMok, two attack rolls. First roll is your main hand
[11:09 AM, 2/12/2018]Kelran8+7
[11:10 AM, 2/12/2018]DMand the other?
[11:10 AM, 2/12/2018]Kelran17+7
[11:11 AM, 2/12/2018]Ravenooooooh, i feel a dead hand or two coming on
[11:11 AM, 2/12/2018]DMBoth hit. 1d6+5 damage for your main hand. 1d6 for your off-hand
[11:11 AM, 2/12/2018]Kelran4+5 / 4
[11:12 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusA dead hand can be useful sometimes 😉
[11:12 AM, 2/12/2018]DMYou shish-kebab one, and chop the fingers off the other. They wriggle around for a bit and then stop moving altogether.
[11:14 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand3 crawls up the wall and leaps off it trying to punch Kelran in the face. He feints out of the way though. The fist punches the opposite wall and falls to the ground.
[11:16 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand10 crawls up the back of Raven's leg, digs its nails into her calf and slides down like in the movies when a pirate slides down a sail with his sword. 2 damage.
[11:17 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand7 leaps up and chokes Raven for 4 damage.
[11:17 AM, 2/12/2018]DMsory
[11:17 AM, 2/12/2018]DMnot Raven, Kit. It chokes Kit for 4 damage.
[11:18 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand4 drops from the ceiling and claws Kelran's face for 4 damage.
[11:19 AM, 2/12/2018]Ravennot the face!!!!
[11:19 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand5 uppercuts Frakus in the junk for 4 damage.
[11:19 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus thinks all human faces are ugly...
[11:20 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusDo lizards have junk?
[11:20 AM, 2/12/2018]DMHand1 tries to bitch slap Gaz but misses. Instead it gives him a high-five.
[11:20 AM, 2/12/2018]DMgood question. I don't know. You're right. Frakus has no dick.
[11:21 AM, 2/12/2018]DMKit, you're up. 2 are dead. 8 remain.
[11:21 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusHP subtracted.
[11:21 AM, 2/12/2018]FrakusThank you for acknowledging that
[12:39 PM, 2/12/2018]KitHand 7 is still on me?
[12:41 PM, 2/12/2018]DMit's by your foot. It slid down and scraped your leg. It has little tufts of fur in his moldy, clawed nail. (For all intents and purposes though, they're all within melee distance...but 7's the one that done scraped ya)
[12:41 PM, 2/12/2018]KitKit slices at 7 with her rapier
[12:42 PM, 2/12/2018]DMroll it! (BTW, this is for everyone. Anytime you say you're gonna attack something, just go ahead and make the roll right away. But just the attack roll, not the damage).
[12:43 PM, 2/12/2018]Kit9
[12:44 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou try and stab it but it opens its fingers wide and you go right in between. Then it hops up on its little stump and gives you one of these:
[12:44 PM, 2/12/2018]DMFrakus...
[1:02 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus follows Kerlan's lead and goes for the double axe attack.
[1:03 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus12+4
[1:03 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus7+4
[1:03 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusMain hand first.
[1:03 PM, 2/12/2018]DMyour main hand hits. Your other misses. Roll for damage.
[1:03 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus4+2
[1:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMHand 5 is cleft in twain. Little finger sausages roll on the floor.
[1:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMRaven...
[1:05 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenWhat hands are dead now?
[1:05 PM, 2/12/2018]DM8, 6, 5
[1:06 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenWhat hands are damaged?
[1:06 PM, 2/12/2018]DMnone
[1:07 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenOk
[1:07 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenDouble dagger attack
[1:07 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven16, 15
[1:08 PM, 2/12/2018]DMboth hit. Roll damage
[1:08 PM, 2/12/2018]Ravenon 10 and 7, or whichever hands are closest
[1:08 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven4 & 5
[1:08 PM, 2/12/2018]DMyour off-hand doesn't get the +2, so it would be 4 and 3
[1:09 PM, 2/12/2018]Ravenok...
[1:09 PM, 2/12/2018]DMeither way, it turns out dismembered hands are incredibly fragile. You skewer one on the end of each of your daggers.
[1:09 PM, 2/12/2018]Ravenprobably shoulda just blasted the shit out of one of them
[1:09 PM, 2/12/2018]Ravenoh! nice!
[1:10 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenI move close to Gaz in the hopes that any hands nearby will target me instead of him
[1:11 PM, 2/12/2018]GazGaz takes this as an obvious come on.

"Madam, I am a monk."
[1:12 PM, 2/12/2018]DMlol
[1:12 PM, 2/12/2018]DMalso, Raven's temp hit points go back up 4 as she sucks the life out of the hands
[1:12 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Don't flatter yourself Dobby. If I slap you now, you're literally going to die."
[1:13 PM, 2/12/2018]DMthat's quite literally true
[1:13 PM, 2/12/2018]Raveni know. Literally!
[1:17 PM, 2/12/2018]DMHand 9 tries to sneak behind Raven and claw at the goblin. Gaz once again manages to spin out of the way just in time.
[1:17 PM, 2/12/2018]DMGaz, you're up
[1:26 PM, 2/12/2018]GazGaz fires a dart at #9
[1:30 PM, 2/12/2018]GazRolling ... 8!
[1:34 PM, 2/12/2018]DMIt would be with disadvantage since you're in such close quarters, but it's moot. You miss. The dart lands near the hand. It picks it up and hops excitedly. A new toy!
[1:34 PM, 2/12/2018]GazHa ha!
I distracted it!
[1:35 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou can also use your martial arts punch. Wanna punch a fist with a fist?
[1:35 PM, 2/12/2018]GazYou know I do.
[1:36 PM, 2/12/2018]DM1d20+5
[1:36 PM, 2/12/2018]Gaz24! ... and 11.
Darn it
[1:37 PM, 2/12/2018]DMNo. The punch isn't with disadvantage. Only ranged attacks. The 24 is fine.
[1:39 PM, 2/12/2018]Gaz1d4 for damage ... 3!
[1:39 PM, 2/12/2018]DM+3 for your dext modifier. 6.
[1:39 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven"That'll do Gazzer!! Nice one!"
[1:40 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou feel all the bones crush as you deliver a brutal blow. It sounds like someone snapping a handful of sticks.
[1:42 PM, 2/12/2018]DMHand 2 attempts to ass grab Kelran. Kelran's posterior proves to be too hard to get a good hold of.
[1:42 PM, 2/12/2018]DMKelran, you're up. 4 hands remain.
[1:43 PM, 2/12/2018]Kelranwhich hands are left?
[1:43 PM, 2/12/2018]DM3, 4, 1, 2 (listed in order of their turn order)
[1:45 PM, 2/12/2018]Kelrankelran goes for double attack again. Main 3 and off on 4 18+7 / 12+7
[1:45 PM, 2/12/2018]DMbot hit. Roll damage
[1:46 PM, 2/12/2018]Kelran5+5 / 5
[1:47 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou slice 'em, you dice 'em, you even julienne them! 2 more down.
[1:48 PM, 2/12/2018]DMHand 2 leaps up and claws Raven's face for 2 damage.
[1:48 PM, 2/12/2018]DMKit, you're up
[1:50 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenWhat? Seriously? The face?
[1:51 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven"Hand 2, you're gonna wish you never came to life on your own".
[2:53 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenOk, so besides Hand 2 (which just scratched my face and will regret it), what hands are left for Kit to kill?
[2:54 PM, 2/12/2018]DM2, 1
[4:21 PM, 2/12/2018]KitWhich is closest?
[4:21 PM, 2/12/2018]DMeither. They're all within reach
[4:23 PM, 2/12/2018]KitSlashy-slashy with rapier on 2. Kit’s pissed the hand attacked her friend and saviour, the powerful Raven.
[4:24 PM, 2/12/2018]KitFuck! 9
[4:25 PM, 2/12/2018]KitFuck these fucking severed hands, thinks Kit
[4:25 PM, 2/12/2018]DMFrakus
[4:48 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusLet’s try that again. Double axe attack.
[4:48 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus17+4
[4:48 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus12+4
[4:59 PM, 2/12/2018]DMboth hits. Roll damage
[5:01 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus5+2
[5:02 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus1
[5:02 PM, 2/12/2018]DMone of them is chopped to bits. The other one loses a finger, but is otherwise still crawling around and now super pissed.
[5:03 PM, 2/12/2018]DMRaven
[5:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMit's the last hand
[5:57 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenRaven raises her palm to the hand. “You’re toast, you piece of shit”
[5:57 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenEldritch Blast.
[5:58 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven23
[5:58 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven7
[5:58 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven“Suck it”
[5:58 PM, 2/12/2018]DMWith disadvantage. Attack roll again please.
[5:59 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven14
[6:00 PM, 2/12/2018]DMThat'll do it! Consider this hallway demon-hand-free.
[6:01 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou guys are out of turn-based time.
[6:14 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus picks up two of the dead hands and high fives them.
[6:20 PM, 2/12/2018]DMIt's…morbid. Yet funny.
[6:27 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven“Ok! That was fun! Let’s get the fuck out of here. If you hear any more noises, don’t check them out. Staircase?”
[6:27 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusBut... :-(
[6:35 PM, 2/12/2018]Kit“Lead the way, sister.”
[6:41 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus“After you, Raven.”
[7:22 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenRaven heads down the hall and turns right.
[8:11 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou pass by the other cells and hang a right. It's a short 5' hallway that ends in a door. The door has a large detailed skull carved into it.
[8:16 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusAny sounds?
[8:16 PM, 2/12/2018]DMRoll for Perception.
[8:16 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus13
[8:17 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou hear nothing of note.
[8:21 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusLet’s take a close look at that door.
[8:21 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus15
[8:22 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusHuman skull? Any writing?
[8:31 PM, 2/12/2018]DMHumanoid. No writing. Make an Arcana check.
[8:31 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus19
[8:32 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou realize that this door has a similar magical mechanic to it as the kraken door. You're pretty sure it's a trap and wager that if you scratch out the eyes it'll probably disarm the door.
[8:34 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus does that.
[8:35 PM, 2/12/2018]DMThat happens.
[8:35 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusFrakus opens the door.
[8:38 PM, 2/12/2018]DMit's locked
[8:39 PM, 2/12/2018]FrakusWhat kind of lock?
[8:39 PM, 2/12/2018]DMbuilt into the door
[8:40 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus“Hey Kit”
[9:00 PM, 2/12/2018]KitKit’s on it! She tries to pick the lock.
[9:01 PM, 2/12/2018]KitDex +4+2+2, right?
[9:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMyeah
[9:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMwell
[9:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMd20 + 4 + 2 + 2
[9:04 PM, 2/12/2018]DMor d20 +8
[9:05 PM, 2/12/2018]Kit17
[9:06 PM, 2/12/2018]DMYou hear a rogue's most favorite sound. Klink
[9:08 PM, 2/12/2018]Frakus👊🏼
[9:19 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenOk! Kit!! Be suuuuuuuper stealthy and stealthily open the door and then stealthily peek inside.
[9:20 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenDon’t forget! Be. Stealthy.
[9:28 PM, 2/12/2018]KitKit stealthily takes a peek inside
[9:29 PM, 2/12/2018]DMroll it
[9:29 PM, 2/12/2018]Kit25
[9:30 PM, 2/12/2018]KitSuper stealth
[9:33 PM, 2/12/2018]DMAs sneaky as you are though, and it is indeed very very sneaky, there's no one around to hear you. Or...not hear you as the case may be. You find yourself back in the room you were in when you first entered this cellar/dungeon.
[9:33 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenYeah!!!!
[9:34 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenYahoo!!!!!
[9:34 PM, 2/12/2018]DMTurns out Kit wasn't ever that far away from where she was originally teleported. Just a hop, skip, and a jump. You guys took the scenic route.
[9:35 PM, 2/12/2018]RavenRaven very silently cheers in her head. “Ok,” she whispers. Let’s hear back to the boat to see Ramalia”.
[9:35 PM, 2/12/2018]Raven*head
[9:36 PM, 2/12/2018]KitI’m on board with that plan. Let’s get out of this hell hole.
[9:40 PM, 2/12/2018]GazGaz is happy to flee
[9:46 PM, 2/12/2018]DMAs you exit the cave, Callbrax is waiting for you on the shore, scroll unfurled. “Took ya long enough! Stand still now, this’ll only take a moment,” he barks before uttering an incantation.

In a flash of blue light, you are transported to a circle of runes on a forest floor. Dark pine trees with enormous spider webs block out the sky. Injured and dead Harpers are laid on stretchers and the remains of skeletons, zombies, demons, constructs, and more litter the ground. Before you is the monolithic tower of black stone that Zaldara calls home. The smell of flesh burning and ring of steel emanates from the place of horrors.

“Stay here!” calls the voice of Remallia Haventree. The elf stands behind you, her left leg crisp with burned flesh and her right arm limp and bleeding. She screams at the tower, “Zaldara! It is done! We have your spellbook!”

An instant later, there is a terrible crack. Appearing before you is a woman with a face that is half beautiful, half skull. Despite her ragged breath and multiple fresh wounds, the Duchess of Rot is still clearly a force to be reckoned with. She points a finger at Remallia, and lifts her high into the air, and drops the elf back to the ground unconscious. The lich then turns to you. “I’ll take that back,” she says with a weak, but defiant voice.
[9:22 AM, 2/13/2018]Frakus"No"
[9:33 AM, 2/13/2018]Frakus"You're one ugly piece of shit, even by human standards. The book is ours."
[9:34 AM, 2/13/2018]FrakusRoll for psychological damage?
[9:40 AM, 2/13/2018]DMShe bellows at you in an impossibly loud voice that literally shakes the earth under your feet. "GIVE ME MY BOOK NOW OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!". It's impressive, but after she does this you can see it tired her out. She's trying to hide it, but she really wants to put her hands on her knees to catch her breath.
[9:40 AM, 2/13/2018]DMYou can all make Insight checks.
[9:41 AM, 2/13/2018]Frakus1 🙁
[9:41 AM, 2/13/2018]DMFrakus thinks he's talking to a tree.
[9:44 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"Zaldara. We have your book, and we're not giving it back. In fact," Raven pulls out her dagger and the book and lightly digs the dagger's point into the front of the book, "if you don't do as we say, your book will be skinned, then blasted with some pretty impressive beams of pure energy. And that's just how we'll start."
[9:45 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"However, if you're willing to cooperate with us, then maybe... just maybe... we can come to some sort of an agreement about your gross book."
[9:45 AM, 2/13/2018]DMRoll for Persuasion (or Intimidation, whatever you prefer)
[9:46 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven22
[9:47 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven(intimidation... it's +5)
[9:48 AM, 2/13/2018]DM"Whoah whoah whoah. Everyone just chill out. You're talkin' crazy here. Just put down the knife ok? Look, I'll cooperate. Just please," she pauses for a moment, scrunches up her face with tears in her eyes, "pleeeeease, don't hurt my book. I'll tell you anything you want to know as long as you promise to give it back."
[9:49 AM, 2/13/2018]RavenRaven eases up with the dagger point but keeps it close to the fleshy cover.
[9:50 AM, 2/13/2018]DM"So what do you want?"
[9:51 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"We're investigating this curse... the curse that is infecting those who have been brought back from the dead and making them die again"
[9:52 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"We have it on good authority that you have knowledge of the source of this curse". Raven smiles and sticks the point of the dagger back into the book. "Be honest now. You wouldn't want me hurting your little booky wooky now, would you?"
[9:54 AM, 2/13/2018]DM"Holy hell woman, chill the fuck out would you! Stop poking my book! Look, I'm aware of the curse. It affects us all. It's even preventing me from feeding souls to my phylactery. All the souls in the world are being pulled towards something happening in a land far from here. I believe it to be happening in area called Chult".
[9:55 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"How have you come by this information?"
[10:01 AM, 2/13/2018]DM"Don't you know anything? What are you, new to adventuring?! A lich must constantly feed souls to its phylactery in order to maintain its immortal life. If we don't, the cold hand of death will finally catch up with us. So obviously, it's kind of in my best interests to look into this as much as possible. I've been researching the issue but haven't gotten very far. All I know is that there's something...something very powerful...in a land far from here called Chult that is sucking up all the souls in the world. The only thing I know of that has that kind of power is a bit of a myth in our circle. I never believed it could be true, but I don't know of anything else that has such a widespread effect. I now believe the myth of the Soulmonger to be true."
[10:02 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"Tell us the myth of the Soulmonger"
[10:07 AM, 2/13/2018]DM"Very little is truly known about. The scraps of information that have been cobbled together are this. It's an ungodly necromantic device. What its purpose is beyond consuming souls is unclear, but the amount of dark energy gathered by a Soulmonger would be enough to power an undead being like the world has never seen. If it's true, if a Soulmonger actually exists, and if someone has been able to harness its power, well frankly, it's pretty impressive. I'm more than a little embarrassed I didn't think to acquire one myself." Her eyes flit nervously to the book. "Are we good here? I've told you all I know. Would you kindly return my book now?" Her hand stretches out.
[10:10 AM, 2/13/2018]FrakusFrakus whispers to Raven, "I don't trust her. Why would we give her back her book. She'll only use it to hurt others. She's weak. We can take her."
[10:10 AM, 2/13/2018]DMKeep in mind Frakus believes he's talking to an animated tree. His insight in this situation is not to be trusted.
[10:12 AM, 2/13/2018]Frakus"What else are axes for?..."
[10:58 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"Where is Chult?", raven asks Zaldara
[10:59 AM, 2/13/2018]RavenHer raven stoops down from her shoulder and pecks at little bits of skin on the books cover.
[11:13 AM, 2/13/2018]DMShe rolls her eyes. With her outstretched hand she turns it into a point and points south. She then turns it back around palm up and gives a little "give it" motion.
[11:16 AM, 2/13/2018]Raven"Cure Ramala if you want this book", Raven says. Then she holds it out to the side and raises her palm towards it. "Or I'll blast it"
[11:36 AM, 2/13/2018]DMShe throws her arms in the air in frustration. She puts one hand on her hips and the other motions up and down over her body. "Do I LOOK like the healing type to you?! You know, I was having a perfectly fine, peaceful day and here you guys come barging into my lair killing all of my minions. Do you know how long it takes to charm this many baddies to do your bidding? It's not easy you know! Heal her yourself."

She walks around looking at the carnage. She picks up a severed demon arm and waves it at you. "Look at this! What a mess."
[1:07 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenRaven motions for her team to approach her. She whispers as quietly as she can: "Anything else we should ask her? Oh, and should we kill this book dead?"
[1:25 PM, 2/13/2018]DMZaldara continues moseying around the battlefield kicking stray body parts and muttering to herself. She picks up a zombie head and tries to push it back into place. It falls right off again of course. She sighs.
[1:38 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven"I think we can ask for money, maybe some spells, or even some healing potions... at the very least."
[2:04 PM, 2/13/2018]DMShe's got an armful of limbs all hanging askew. Every time she picks a new one up, one other falls out of her arms. She drops them all in frustration. "Hey! What's going on over there? I don't have all day here."
[2:08 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven"What could be so powerful that it can suck all souls to it?"
[2:16 PM, 2/13/2018]DM"Were....were you not listening? Like, at all? A Soulmonger. Kids these days."
[2:25 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven"That's his name? I'm looking for names here you testy bitch. Settle down or the book gets it."
[2:26 PM, 2/13/2018]DM"It. Not he. It."
[2:26 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven"Is it a person or an object? Is it like a giant phylactery?"
[2:28 PM, 2/13/2018]DM"Basically. But who's to say really. I've never known one to exist. Look, I've told you what I know and I'm getting really impatient here. You know I'm a lich right? I could smite all of you without breaking a stride. I bet you messed up all my stuff down there too. You better not have hurt my hands. I love those things."
[2:29 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven"Your hands send you their highest regard", says Raven with a sweet smile
[2:29 PM, 2/13/2018]DM"You bitch!"
[2:30 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenRaven turns back to her friends and whispers, "Ok, seriously guys. What do you want to do with this cunt?"
[5:40 PM, 2/13/2018]DMThe Duchess squints her eyes as she evaluates Raven's companions. "Heyyyyyy. Why are your friends so quiet?" She pokes the goblin with a stick to make sure he's not a cardboard cutout and this isn't all a clever rouse to make her think you have backup.
[6:05 PM, 2/13/2018]KitKit whispers to Raven and the rest of the group, “We can try to get more out of her. Maybe some spells or healing potions? It’s worth a try.”
[6:11 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusWith his back turned to the lich, Frakus winks at Raven and Kit and snatches the book. “Don’t be crazy, there’s no way in hell we’re giving her back this book.”
[6:12 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenFrakus, leave the book to me. Do not touch, don’t do anything.
[6:12 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven“If we fight her, we’ll lose.”
[6:13 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven“We have to play nice. Let’s get some money or potions and get the hell outta here”, she whispers, tense.
[6:14 PM, 2/13/2018]Kit“I can try to get more out of her. Let me give it a go.”
[6:14 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusTime out
[6:15 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusFrakus did that.
[6:15 PM, 2/13/2018]DMEach of you make a Strength check.
[6:15 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusUse it as leverage if you want. Book is in the hands of a crazy lizard man.
[6:16 PM, 2/13/2018]Frakus18+2
[6:16 PM, 2/13/2018]Kit9+0
[6:16 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusDinner. Back in a bit.
[6:16 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven12
[6:17 PM, 2/13/2018]DMNo I just meant Ryan and Jenny. He's trying to take the book from her.
[6:17 PM, 2/13/2018]KitAh
[6:17 PM, 2/13/2018]DMWhich he does. Frakus has the book
[6:18 PM, 2/13/2018]DMZaldara sees the commotion. "Hey! What's going on over there?"
[6:18 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven“Frakus. Seriously. Give me the book. We do not want to engage this thing.”
[6:23 PM, 2/13/2018]DMFrakus, you have the book. What's your plan?
[6:31 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusFrakus grips it firmly in both hands, forearms flexed, ready to rip. He looks at Raven, eyebrows raised, as if to say, “do what you’re gonna do.”
[6:35 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven“Ok Freakus. What’s your big plan?”
[6:38 PM, 2/13/2018]FrakusDo you literally say that to him?
[6:39 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenYeah?
[6:42 PM, 2/13/2018]Frakus“No plan. I’m just gonna rip this book to shreds!”
[6:45 PM, 2/13/2018]Kit“It’s our only leverage against her. Maybe we should take a vote? Who’s for Frakus ripping the book to shreds and who’s for trying to get more out of her?”
[6:46 PM, 2/13/2018]DM"You know I can hear you right? Fools! I tire of this." She raises her hands menacingly. Rolling initiative…
[6:47 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenRaven puts her hands up in the air and says, “If Frakus even looks at that book funny, I’m cutting and running. That lich will toast us and have us all for breakfast.”
[6:47 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven“We can’t win against her, so I reallllllly thing we should play nice”
[6:48 PM, 2/13/2018]DMTurn order is Zaldara, Raven, Frakus, Kelran, Gaz, Kit
[6:48 PM, 2/13/2018]Kit“I agree.”
[6:48 PM, 2/13/2018]KitUgh
[6:48 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenFuck.
[7:02 PM, 2/13/2018]DMThe Duchess limps toward Frakus. "I think I'll be taking that, thank you very much." She touches him on the chest. A deep chill goes through him. Frost spreads out in tendrils across his body. 11 damage. I need you to make a Constitution savings throw.
[7:45 PM, 2/13/2018]Frakus2+5
[7:50 PM, 2/13/2018]DMJust before you pass out you feel your muscles seize. You go stiff as a board and fall flat on your face. Unless someone manages to stabilize you first, you'll be making death saving throws on your next turn.
[7:50 PM, 2/13/2018]DMRaven, you're up.
[7:55 PM, 2/13/2018]DMForgot to mention. The book remains clutched to his chest.
[8:56 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenRaven wrestles the book from Frakus’ petrified arms, runs back 30’feet and shouts, “That’s enough you crazy bitch! You agree to leave us alone and you can have your book back! If you don’t back off, we begin stabbing and burning and piercing and tearing at this thing until you beg us to stop!”
[8:57 PM, 2/13/2018]DMThe book part, fine. But I'd just like to remind you about opportunity attacks.
[8:57 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenAh yes.
[8:57 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenShe sorta stays where she is.
[8:59 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenShe hold the book above her head, Say Anything style.
[8:59 PM, 2/13/2018]RavenHolds*
[9:03 PM, 2/13/2018]DMYou see her mull over her options. She looks longingly, desperately at the book. Then glares at the rest of you with - what I imagine - weapons drawn. Back at the book. Back at you. Oh what to do, what to do. She would love nothing more than to vaporize all of you, but knows that she won't even get the benefit of feeding your souls to her book because of this blasted curse. She keeps her hand raised, ready to strike, and says, "Do you think you can actually stop the death curse?"
[9:07 PM, 2/13/2018]Raven“Yes. I think we can”, she says as convincingly as possible. “But not if we’re dead!”, she gestures toward Frakus. “Give us some healing potions and we promise you, we’ll head south to Chult to find the Soulmonger. Let us go.”
[9:14 PM, 2/13/2018]DM"Once again, look at me. Really look." You notice her sallow skin hanging from her skull, the angry glowing orbs, where her eyes used to be, her tattered, decayed clothes. "Do I look like the healing type. I'm really more of the 'soul eating' type. Any other day and you would all already be ashes, so let me make this perfectly clear. You. Are testing. My patience. But if you really want him healed so bad I left a healing scroll in the chest where I kept my book. But, oh wait! I guess you probably stole that too didn't you. Plundering swine. Allow me to give you a counter offer. You give me my book and I will refrain from turning you inside out. I can do it you know. I promise, I'll go back to my fortress to clean up the mess your little army has left me, and you, you all will go off to live another day. Deal?"
[9:49 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenRavens arms begin to tremble, having held the Skin Book up “Say Anything” style all night long while waiting for her compadres to weigh in on the deal. “So?”, she whispers, wincing a little from the muscle burn. “I drop the book, we lower our weapons, grab Frakus, and run like hell?? Or do we try and kill the book and maybe get murdered?”
[9:51 AM, 2/14/2018]KelranI am with you Raven. Lets give her the book. Why lower our weapons? I would rather hold on to mine in case things go south
[9:51 AM, 2/14/2018]DM"Again, I can hear you." She puts on a mocking tone as she addresses the slain monsters on the ground. "Oh hey guys. Do you think I should like totally murder all of these noobs in one fell swoop. Der de der." She goes back to her normal voice. "That's you. That's what you sound like. So rude."
[9:52 AM, 2/14/2018]Frakuslol
[9:55 AM, 2/14/2018]KitTime to give her the book
[10:01 AM, 2/14/2018]DM"Wise kitty"
[10:23 AM, 2/14/2018]Raven“Ok”, Raven whispers, more to herself than anyone else. “Ok,” this time louder. “I’m lowering the book to the ground”. Her arms ache as she slowly lowers them down and rests the book ever so gently at her feet. No sudden movement. She deliberately raises her hands back into the air “I’m moving away now.”
[10:24 AM, 2/14/2018]Raven“Kelran, you wanna grab a leg and help me get Frakus to a safer location?”
[10:24 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenAre there any live Harpers left?
[10:25 AM, 2/14/2018]DMTechnically, you're all in turn-based time still because, who knows, anything can happen. But if you're all agreeing to back off and let Zaldara take her book back then we can exit turn-time. Otherwise, let me know now if anyone plans on attacking while the Duchess is picking up the book.
[10:26 AM, 2/14/2018]DMHarpers left: yes. There's been an ongoing battle continuing in the fortress, but I'm sure Zaldara will call off her forces once she has the book.
[10:26 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenAny wounded but alive where we are? Ie: Remalia?
[10:27 AM, 2/14/2018]DMThere's tons wounded and unconscious. Impossible to tell who's alive and who's dead though.
[10:28 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenRaven slowly step over to Ramalia to check her vitals
[10:33 AM, 2/14/2018]DMShe's alive and stable, but unconscious. Ryan, go ahead and make your first death savings throw.
[10:33 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenAnyone have a potion we can use on Frakus?
[10:38 AM, 2/14/2018]Frakusi made my first yesterday
[10:39 AM, 2/14/2018]DMNo, that was a Constitution savings throw to see if Zaldara's attack paralyzed you. This is now death savings throws. Roll a d20. No modifiers.
[10:39 AM, 2/14/2018]Frakus18
[10:40 AM, 2/14/2018]DMthat's one success. Two to go. So, anyone want to do a Medicine check on him to stabilize him? Or anyone got a potion? Otherwise he's rolling again.
[10:42 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenI'll try a medicine check.
[10:42 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenWhat do I roll?
[10:43 AM, 2/14/2018]DMYou have Medicine as a skill on your Abilities/Skills page. Roll a d20 and add whatever the modifier is.
[10:44 AM, 2/14/2018]Raven14
[10:45 AM, 2/14/2018]DMYou pump his chest a few times. After a bit of that you feel his breathing become more regular. Looks like he's gonna make it.
[10:46 AM, 2/14/2018]Ravenoh good
[10:46 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenCan i do anything to help Ramalia?
[10:47 AM, 2/14/2018]DMZaldara picks up the book and slowly backs away from you all. As she enters the tower you hear her call to her minions to stop fighting. The background din of metal clashing against metal mixed with the occasional scream dies down. After several moments, many battle-weary Harpers emerge.
[10:49 AM, 2/14/2018]DMOne of them rushes to Remalia and casts a healing spell on her. She awakes, props her head up slowly and whispers something to her comrade. He calls you all over.
[10:50 AM, 2/14/2018]RavenRaven goes to him.
[10:59 AM, 2/14/2018]DMYou all head over (I assume). She asks you what happened. What did you learn? You relay everything you learned from Zaldara. In a weak voice she thanks you. "I knew you could do it. As soon as I saw you I could feel you were the right lot to get the job done. Well done, all of you. Come, let us leave this place. We have a camp prepared in Cloakwood Forest not far from here. I think we deserve a rest."

Two of the Harper soldiers help her to her feet and you all march off into the forest. After a while you come across the camp. Everyone begins tending to their wounds and telling stories of what happened to each other. Many come up to the strange, noble adventurers that helped them and give you pats on the back, congratulations, approving nods, high fives, etc...

After dinner Remalia and Syndra approach you. "Here, the amount we agreed upon." Syndra hands you a large pouch with 500gp in it.
Jub Jub
[1:16 PM, 2/14/2018]DMSo unless anyone has something specific they want to say or do, I suppose you can all go ahead and have a little Ewok victory ceremony and head off to bed. Get that long rest you deserve. Anyone want to do something first?
[1:19 PM, 2/14/2018]KelranCan I get a drink?!
[1:23 PM, 2/14/2018]DMThere's a leather tarp covering a long table full of food and plenty of ale. Drink up!
[3:57 PM, 2/14/2018]DMSo after some merriment and licking of wounds you guys find a comfortable place to hunker down for the night. (If you've been keeping track of your hit points, spell slots, etc... in Fight Club you can click on the menu, tap Rest, then Long Rest. For Phil, similar thing. Click on the kebab menu -> Short/Long rest -> select Long Rest -> apply).
[4:02 PM, 2/14/2018]DMPhil, I forget if I've explained short vs long rests yet. A short rest is like ~20 mins or so. You can take them whenever you want, but typically only when it's safe. If you're doing it in the middle of a dungeon you better make damn sure you've barricaded the door. During a short rest you can spend a "hit dice" to heal yourself a little bit. Just a quick patch job. Also, some abilities that you have a limited use of regenerate after a short rest (depends on what abilities your character has. It should say on the sheet).

A long rest however is ~8hrs and you can only benefit from it once a day. After a long rest (unless something else prevents it) you get all of your hit points back, all of your spell slots back, all of your abilities, etc... You also get back half of any hit dice you've spent during the day (rounded down and you always get at least one).
[4:03 PM, 2/14/2018]DMBefore you guys hunker down though, Raven spends a while concentrating on the magical gem and shield you guys picked up. After some time she learns the following...
[4:07 PM, 2/14/2018]Frakus😁
[4:10 PM, 2/14/2018]DMGem of Brightness: it has 35 charges remaining. While you are holding it you can use an action to speak one of three command words to cause one of the following effects:
1. The first command word causes the gem to shed bright light in a 30' radius and dim light for an additional 30'. Doing so doesn't expend a charge. You can use a bonus action to turn it off.
2. The second command word expends 1 charge and causes the gem to fire a brilliant beam of light at one creature you can see within 60'. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or become blinded for 1 minute. It can repeat the saving throw on each of its turns.
3. The third command word expends 5 charges and causes the gem to flare with blinding light in a 30' cone. Each creature in the area must make a saving throw as if struck by the beam created with the second command word.
When all of the charges are expended the gem becomes a nonmagical jewel, but still worth some money.
[4:12 PM, 2/14/2018]DMArrow Catching Shield: You gain +2 bonus to AC against ranged attacks (in addition to the +2 you get just for the fact that it's a shield). In addition, whenever an attacker makes a ranged attack against a target within 5' of you, you can use your reaction to become the target of the attack instead.
[4:17 PM, 2/14/2018]FrakusSweet
[4:18 PM, 2/14/2018]DMThe shield requires someone to "attune" to it to be of any use. Attuning just means you need to spend a short rest becoming one with the item. So you can't just pass it back and forth between people without them first spending a short rest cuddling with it. So you guys should decide now who's gonna get it. Check to see who's proficient in shields as well as who wouldn't get fucked over by it because your other abilities depend on you not wearing armour (i.e.: Frakus and Gaz).
[4:18 PM, 2/14/2018]DMAlso, you can only ever attune to up to 3 magic items at a time. But the day that becomes an issue is a good day.
[4:20 PM, 2/14/2018]DMBetween the reward money and the gold you found you guys got 725gp. Assuming you split it equally you can each add 145gp to your sheets.
[4:21 PM, 2/14/2018]DMSo you guys decide on who gets the gem and who gets the shield. And then, when you wake up in the morning all bright-eyed, and bushy tailed, not only has Gaz's max HP gone back to normal, but you also all...
[4:22 PM, 2/14/2018]DML-L-L-L-LEVEL UP SON!!!!!!
[4:49 PM, 2/14/2018]KitAhem, not all of us are sons 😉
[4:50 PM, 2/14/2018]DMSorry, I meant to say...Liches get stitches bitches!
[4:50 PM, 2/14/2018]DMbetter?
[4:50 PM, 2/14/2018]KitSomething like that
